No sound from Pioneer VSX-5231 receiver

Okay, at the risk of sounding like a complete idiot, (I will confess I have little experience with HT receivers) I can run the MACCC calibration and get sound out of each speaker and the subwoofer, but I can't get any sound when connecting to the Charter cable box, or the tuner. Its the tuner that's really got me stumped. I'm doing this for a buddy and I forgot to bring a coax cable so I was using his RCA's from the cable box to the receiver inputting to the SAT/CAB input. I set the signal select to analog. Speakers to "A". Nothing. And, as I said I switched to tuner and still nothing. I know I'm forgetting something stupid, so illuminate me please. Or humilitate me. I can take it.

Did you set-up the Sat/cab input ? Is the cable box set on dishing out analog and not digital ? Will it even do that ? Most cable boxes these days I've seen is digital outs.

Yeah, I was wondering if the cable box wasn't strictly digital but he had the RCAs from the cable box to his prior Kenwood receiver and it worked, but like a dumbazz I didn't pay attention to what he had the RCAs plugged into. As far as the Sat/Cab input, I believe I had that set up also. What stumps me is why I can't get the tuner to output music either? I'm definitely going to utilize a coax next for the cable box though. Is there something else I could be forgetting?

Is this like my Pio VSX90 in that the HDMI is only pass through? On mine you have to run digital coax or optical for sound - the HDMI only passes video.

My buddy has the cable box HDMI going to the TV for video but the box doesn't have a separate HDMI for sound, so I can't use HDMI for sound into the receiver anyway the way he currently has it set up. The cable box also has outputs for coax, (and going on memory here, but maybe also optical and USB ) - and then it has the R and L RCA jacks, which strikes me as odd because it should be a digital box, right? I'm going to ditch the RCAs and get my coax cable in there. Still doesn't explain why no tuner sound .....

Yep - that sure sounds like a digital box.

You should be able to run HDMI to the receiver, then from the receiver to the TV though. HDMI carries both sound and video, not just one or the other. That should work, unless of course you have a situation like my mentally challenged Pio, which only sends the video along and passes sound... and therefore you DO need a separate cable for sound (either digital coax or toslink). The fact that you get sound from all channels on test sound leads me to believe that, but I am far from expert.

I agree - you should still have tuner sound though I'd think.

Got a Belden 1694A coax that I'll put in for the audio when I stop over next and see what happens. Worse thing was I was **** around with his set-up during the first half of the Badger/Arizona game and it messed up my otherwise steel-trap concentration. Lol
