So I got home from work last night and wanted to get into working on my demo material for this weekend's Central Iowa Home Theater Crawl
Fired up my TV and had a notice that a software update had been installed and that I needed to restart my TV.
So I did that...and discovered that the software update had bricked my 2 year, 2 month old TV.
I tried doing a hard reset before I called Vizio. No joy.
Called Vizio only to have them tell me that since it was out of warranty, they could send a tech ($$), have them diagnose it and then repair it ($$$).
The problems were several...
First, I know what is wrong...the main board is bricked and needs to be replaced.
Second, Vizio will only sell a main board to an authorized tech.
Third, the soonest they could have a tech out was in the 10-15 days range.
Fourth, since I am hosting a stop on the above mentioned tour and am having surgery in 2 weeks, that simply won't work.
Fifth, main boards are $75-$100 on eBay...1/3rd the cost of what Vizio sells the board for to authorized techs.

But I digress. Vizio wasn't going to do me a solid so I moved on to Costco Concierge Service. Who offered to transfer me to Vizio tech support.

Thoroughly defeated, I broke the news to my wife.
And as she always manages to do, she absolutely shocked me with a "Well, you wanted to upgrade anyway...let's go buy a new TV."

Off we go to Costco to see what they have. (Bear in mind, that this is the first Vizio I have ever had any issues with. I have owned several over the years and they were only replaced due to upgrades and never from any failures on their part.)
I had been wanting a Vizio P Series 4K for a while and they happened to have the 70" with a $449 instant rebate in stock.
I looked at the 65" Samsung curved panel 4K and really didn't like it overall.
We talked and decided that the Vizio is what we wanted and pulled the trigger.
Fortunately, Costco now offers the Square Trade extended warranty so we are also covered for 5 years on this set.

So we get it home and relax for a while before going to bed.

This morning, I am sitting here at work and a thought dawns on me...is my AVR 4K capable?!
Nope. The RX-A1000 offers 3D pass-through but not 4K. *@%#$&*(*^#!!!

So I shoot my wife an email making mention of this and start talking about what items would need to bypass the AVR for 4K viewing...mainly, the Oppo and the HTPC... and what I would need to change cabling-wise to make it happen.

Again, she shocks me with a "Well you wanted to upgrade anyway so see if you can get a new AVR here by Saturday."
:o:o

Don't have to tell me twice!
So I call my buddy at Audio Video Logic in Urbandale and tell him my tale of woe.
I asked him about trade in values for my Yamaha and the SVS Sub EQ I just picked up (won't need it with an AVR that has Audessey with SubEQ built in...)
His response is, "I don't want to insult you with trade in values so I won't even make any offer. But I can make the Denon 4100 happen at 10% above cost...will that work for you?"

**** yeah it will work for me! And I don't have to wait for shipping!!!

So, good thing I installed the front height speakers over this past weekend...I can now actually use them vs using them as front "presence" speakers with the Yamaha.

Bad side, new TV and new AVR purchase in the last 24 hours.

Bright side, new TV and new, more modernly capable AVR.

Always look on the bright side folks. ;)

You must be treating the wife well for her to agree and suggest upgrades as there is no better feeling ( In my opinion) than having them on your side when you upgrade in this expensive hobby.

    Congrats on the new gear.

If my Vizio bricked while doing a software/firmware update, I think I would be done with the brand, but that's just me....

Anyway, I am glad it all worked out well for you, and hope the new TV exceeds your expectations.

Thanks guys. She is definitely a keeper. While she doesn't exactly get excited by this hobby, she supports the HT stuff because she loves movies and would rather spend $15 on a Blu-Ray vs $50+ on a movie for 2.

As for the old TV, already ordered a confirmed 1.34 firmware main board from eBay and will replace it myself. If it works, we sell it and recoup some of the cost of the new TV. If the main board doesn't fix it, well I am out $100.

Long thread over on AVS about the 1.60 firmware woes with the M series models. I didn't want to risk the tech woes some folks are running into and damn sure want a TV while I am laid up for 3 weeks on the couch. Hehe.

    John,

In most cases I would agree with you but I have had like 5 Vizios so far and this was the first ever that gave me an issue. And honestly, if I had never connected it to the network, I never would have had this issue. So I won't be plugging this one into the network unless I read about some software update that vastly improves performance.

That's the biggest problem I have with all this "networked" crap. If they send out bad data, or someone hacks the network and loads malware of some kind, we are screwed.

Watch out for the receiver. I have the Demon 3313 which does "4k pass thru." Unfortunately, its not HDCP 2.2 compliant, so for 4K content, I'll prob have to run the 4k device directly to my TV with HDMI, and then use the audio return feature to get sound from my TV to my receiver.

Haven't done a ton of research, so there may be an easier/better alternative, but that's all I've found so far.

Congrats on the purchase!! Its TV week at Club Polk apparently. :)

My only option then would be to go with Onkyo or Integra and both of those scare me with the HDMI board issues.
The other trade off is the chips could do one or the other...HDMI 2.0 or HDCP 2.2...not both. So the Onkyo/Integra options are limited to 10.2gbps HDMI

I appreciate the sentiment though. The only place it will be a concern will be when HDCP 2.2 content becomes more and more available...at that point, I will simply re-cable my setup to go directly to the TV.

What do the TV updates actually do/update anyway? The only thing I can think of are the apps like Netflix, Pandora, etc.

Sure their friendly and supportive in our times of woes, so I guess you will be trading the Beamer in for something new for her to drive. Yep when they agree and are supportive that easily, you know deep down that dinner and a new pair of shoes isn't going to cut it. My wife has gotten a couple of new rides that way.

You wont get off that easy so enjoy your new toys and whatever new purchase you make soon, cause you know it's coming. :o

Actually, I keep trying to get her to upgrade her car but she insists that she doesn't want to. She loves her little truck car of hers. Hehe. I am indifferent to it until I need to haul some speakers* (*that I probably am buying with PFB's money...Am I right?!?!)
She did mention picking up a small SUV like an X3 or an RX350 next year to replace her car and to pull a small trailer for track days so maybe there is *something* to your train of thought Steve...

But I got a brand new 4100 for only $35 more than A4L sells it for refurbed...
I made out OK and the only thing that is running off the AVR power-wise is the heights. I am also not a huge fan of MCACC...my aunt and uncle bought an SC-05 at my behest and it works great for them with their Def Techs but when running the calibration, it just felt...too separated for my tastes. The speakers were too localized when they should have been more "vague" and then were uber-pinpoint localized when they were supposed to be to the point of almost being too localized. Just MHO really. Overall, I am a fan of the big dog Elites but MCACC leaves me wanting to tweak things afterwards.

The 1.60 software update, besides bricking some TVs, made significant changes to the video processing.
The apps are of course part of the software updates but all of the hardware is controlled by some form of software whether it be firmware or actual software applications that control "stuff".

Got the new TV hung last night. Surprisingly it was lighter than the old TV.

Have only had a chance to check out standard settings and DirecTV on it so far. The upscaling is solid and was surprised at how little motion blur I saw during fast action sequences.

I will probably work on calibrating it later on tonight as I want to get everything dialed in before Saturday.

Got the new AVR loaded into the rack and ran Audessey last night.
Seems to me that Audessey runs the surrounds WAY hotter than the Yamaha did.

The SubEQ was fun to run. Text from my wife upstairs: "The windows up here are rattling and the neighbors are going to be calling soon."
Didn't realize how overly hot I was running my subs on the Yamaha without proper eqing.

Now the real fun begins...seeing how much I like or dislike Atmos (my front heights are right at ceiling level so I ran them as the Atmos front overheads.)
