I love this network... Watching a show about the Hindenburg right now, and it is very well done. Anybody else watch their programming?

I think I saw that already..."oh the humanity". Iused to spend a lot of time on Lakehurst Naval Air Station and I would look that way every time I went through the front gate. The hangers they made for the air ships are HUGE.. I once saw this blimp there that was huge.... it had giant rotors on the top and was used to do construction...
The kid that installed my satellite tv once told me the "Smithstonian channel" was his favorite.

Hangar #1 at Lakehurst is still the largest wooden A-frame structure in the world. There are a whole bunch of gee whiz' about it. The one I like the best is if you could stack people like firewood, the entire population of the state of NJ would fit inside it. It also has a full-scale aircraft-carrier deck layout inside it (minus the island).
I believe the blimp you saw that was "huge with rotors on top" was Frank Piasecki's "Helostat" in it's experimental phase. It didn't get much further than that phase. It was developed in the early 80's and was a blimp with a rectangular framework attached to it, and that framework had a full-scale helicopter in each of it's corners. Four helicopters. Kind of a boon to the logging folks, the blimp could lift the cut trees straight up out of the forest, and the choppers could drive the whole shebang to the mill or just drop them in the river I guess. It made two flights and they were both tether fights. My Dad and I went down for it's first flight and he introed me to Frank Piasecki. It was loud, and impressive. Getting all four helicopters in sync was a big deal. On it's second tether flight, the four got so out of sync the structure vibrated itself into the ground. The lead pilot was killed in the crash. That effectively ended the proyect.
I saw an F-4 catapult launch and recovery out there which was impressive as all get out (another invite from dear old Dad).
They still have the rocket sled tracks out there, and that's something I would've liked to have seen, but they were shut down before I started flying and hanging around there.

Is that the place they filmed that video of the Phantom slamming into a concrete wall at 500 mph to test the effectiveness of designing nuclear power plant structures to withstand attack? The Gear...
