How are you guys streaming into your DACs?

How are you guys streaming from your networks? I was looking at a cdp with digital inputs and was not sure if a USB input was something that was imperative nowadays or would any kind of input (toslink or spdif) be sufficient? What are your choices for streamers?

Thanks

I use a digital coax into my dac. Which cdp you looking at ? The Cary pro 306 ? DK uses one and has compared it to many others who have yet to dethrone it.

I stream music to two PS Audio DACs -- a PerfectWave MKII and a DirectStream -- via my household LAN (Linksys WRT1900AC router and CAT 6 cable). Music files are all (at this point) AIFF files stored on a Synology DiskStation 713+ with two 4TB from Western Digital ("Reds" I believe).

    What's your streamer?

I'm just using a sonos for now. 16/44 is all it's capable of. I don't buy SACD's or download hi-rez so it works for me.

If I had to do it all over again, I might go with a Blue sound unit. DK, who has a Cary 306 is using a Bryston for his streamer and he's tickled pink with it. You can find his review in the digital section.

I'm using a DacMagic and am using coaxial into it from my computer rather than USB. Mostly due to the fact I get a higher bitrate into the DAC w coaxial.

Basically. My motherboard has coaxial and optical outputs... The optical is broken though so I can't use it.

interesting. I didn't know they made them like that; I've been loosely considering building something and have been looking casually for sound cards... always did like the Asus stuff. pretty solid and usually pretty peppy.

Asus laptop running Ubuntu Linux > FLAC (most is 24/96 and some is 24/192) > HDMI > Yamaha Aventage (24/192 Burr Brown)

Saving money and putting together what I want is slow, there's other things I need more than a stand alone DAC. I started from nothing about a year and a half ago, it's coming along.

I just received my Korg DSDAC-100. I am using Korg Audiogate 3.0.2 on a Dell Precision M4400 laptop to the Korg DSDAC-100 via USB. I upconvert everything to DSD 5.6mhz. It sounds great!! and this is with upconverted CDs! I just got it so I have not had time to download DSD files created straight from a master. Very natural sound; vocals, brass, strings, bass, everything and with great dynamics! The "digital" edge seems to be gone. Very impressed with the Korg and with DSD.

When I posted the above, I neglected to say that I use the DiskStation Manager ("DSM") and Audio Station software that came with the DiskStation 713+.

DSM and Audio Station have severe limitations (IMHO) that I would like to overcome by installing different software to stream the music.

At this point I wouldn't recommend my set up, and I'm looking to find an alternative.

Library is on USB3 HD attached to networked PC and WD NAS (backup & cloud).

Primary system uses Squeezebox devices: 5 Touch's, a PC, an Amazon FireTV, and an iPhone. Two Touch's, the FireTV, and the PC use separate DACs. Touch-to-DAC is coax. PC-to-DAC is USB. Others are analog to preamp.

Music player app > Remote app > Stream Device > Cable > Dac

    Primary system:
Logitech Media Server (LMS) > iPeng > SBTouch > Coax > Dac
LMS (Squeezelite) > iPeng > PC > USB > Dac
LMS (SBPlayer-turns FireTV into SB) > iPeng > FireTV > Optical > Dac
    LMS > iPeng > iPhone

    Secondary systems:
    JRiver > JRemote > FireTV > Optical > Dac
    Airplay/DLNA Player Pro > MacBook Air > FireTV > Optical > Dac
Oppo (browse files directly on network) > Optical > Dac
