I saw this on line but didn't know it was Harrison. They say he's fair to moderate condition.

I just heard the update... one lucky guy. It might have been worse if he flew from the forward cockpit.

The aircraft is a Ryan PT-22 Recruit. It looks like this bird is pretty messed up.

I have no idea on that Red... These news reports always are made to sound more grim at first rather than optimistic.

On the news they took him away on a gurney. That plane is 73 years old, Harrison is 72. I guess the plane meet its match and Harrison going to walk away!

All things considered, that's not a bad crash landing.

    Absolutely.

Must have been all that skill he picked up flying the Millennium Falcon...

The last I heard was that the plane stalled @200 feet after banking to the left. It fell almost straight down after that, according to an eye-witness... He requested an immediate return to Santa Monica Airport after engine failure on takeoff.

Sounds like he spun it in. One of the biggest mistakes pilots make is trying to return to the airport after an immediate engine failure on takeoff. If true then his landing and survival was luck, not skill.

My thoughts too. Not much damage to the grass, and the landing gear is pancaked into the bottom of the fuselage. It also appears buckled behind the aft cockpit.

I just decided not to renew my membership in AOPA (Aircraft Owners and Pilot Association), and the last issue of their magazine I received was an article on this subject.

    Yes it was...

Appears he has a badly broken pelvis, some compression fractures in the lower spine and a broken ankle.

Not bad really considering his age. I'd hesitate to play armchair pilot though, the man has been flying for a good amount of time so I'm pretty sure he knows what he's doing up there.

He is supposed to be making a new Blade Runner film. Assuming he can recover from this, and 72 is on the old side for fully recovering, I suspect any contracts will state no private airplane use. On the other hand, he has enough money and should retire.

Wasn't really a crash. It was an emergency landing after engine failure on take off.

His engine failed at 350 feet of altitude and he contacted the tower declaring an engine out emergency. He made a turn to the left of 180 degrees and made a nearly perfect landing on the Penmar Golf Course. If he had been even 40 feet higher he would have been able to go the additional distance to the long stretch of perfectly smooth golf course and would not have made contact with the tree. Since he didn't he set the aircraft down on the best available stretch of ground. He walked away from the crash with only minor injuries. A cut face and arm are pretty minor when you consider the possible levels of post failure damage.
He did a damn good job of saving himself, the people and their property on the ground, and even the airframe.

The plane had just been fueled and was in better than new condition. There is speculation that the fuel truck delivered contaminated fuel. But only the full one year FAA accident investigation process will give the exact cause.

I live a mile and a half from the final resting point of his aircraft. Been around that airfield since I was five. And I am the loud obnoxious guy at the city council meetings whenever they discuss trying to close or cut operations at the airport.
My only question is "who was here first." Don't like aircraft? Then sell your house and move somewhere there are no airports.
