Friend: Hey, John! I wanna get a kick-patootie home theater! What should I get?
Me: I dunno, need more info like room size, what are you looking to do with it, what are your options for speaker placement, etc, etc, etc.
Friend: Oh...I didn't know all that.
Me: Well, of course you didn't, that would be why you asked me, wouldn't it?
Friend: Yeah, I guess! So what do you think?
Me: Well, how many speakers do you want?
Friend: Huh? How many can I have?
Me: Well, as many as you want but 5.1 is kinda the standard even though 6.1, 7.1 and even 8.1 are out there but nobody is programming for them, really.
Friend: Oh....sounds expensive.
Me: Well, how much do you want to spend?
Friend: I dunno...what's good? Like $300?
Me: ...
Friend: What? Too much?
Me: ...
Friend: ...
Me: I heard WAL*MART is having a sale on a Samsung doohickeys. Maybe try that?
Friend: Is that it?
Me: That's what fits your budget.
Friend: *indignantly* I could have done that myself!

Yeah. Makes me die a little inside every time.

Get that and also in the IT realm.

What I really enjoy is when someone asks me a question about things like Photoshop or Adobe Acrobat.
Uh...I am a systems engineer...just because I work with computers doesn't mean I know all aspects of them. You're an accountant? Can you tell me how to get the best return on my 401k, stock purchases and other investments? What do you mean you don't know? Those things deal with money so clearly they are accounting...right?

I wish yall could hear my $800 system. Don't think it can be touched for the money, and would be hard to outdo for 3 times that.

Can you tell I'm flippin you the bird right now??? :D:p

I've got well over $800 in my 2nd system...which doesn't touch my first system...which doesn't touch your system.

But to the OP: As a friend once told me when I was listening to his new system, "You've got to pay to play." Oh, he had a Bose Acoustimass. Funniest thing I ever heard that I didn't actually laugh at.

$300? Monitor 7's or 10's, wait to find a pair for ~$100 then spend $200 on a vintage integrated amp like baby Marantz (or what have you). That would blow away anything Walmart has for sale.

  • I love those kind of questions.
Especially if they are coming from a friend that is married.
Once they get over the shock of how much it is "possible" to spend. Then they realize that they would never be allowed to set it up in their house.
So the discussion gets around to hidden speakers. Then the fact that they have to be wired.
After that it just kind of peters out.

I got comments from a few guys at work too - "You spent $900 on a subwoofer??? You can get a TV and a whole setup for that!" Uh huh.

This same person probably thinks you're nuts for tending to a BBQ for 6 hours too.
The things that are worthwhile usually take time, money, or both.

So, are you willing to put forth a little effort or are you happy sitting in your skeptical poo pile?

That's sig material right there.....and spot on.

Comes down to what we put importance on in our lives. Some have no problem spending 5 bucks for a bottled water, 150 bucks on gym shoes, 500 bucks on a purse, or have to drive a Land Rover.

Once "good sound" enters some level of importance in your life, only then will you spend the money.

The thing that really gets me is "What are the best speakers, I want the very best" Then, after all the research on something they can actually afford they don't want to spend that much. "Well, if you want great sound for nothing try the Pioneer Andrew Jones series". "I'm not buying hundred dollar crap!"

    Geesh!
