Yamaha 1400 OSD questions

I'm going to buy a Yamaha RX-V1400. Do you run all your video through the 1400? I currently run S Video through my receiver (Onkyo 500) and component direct to the TV. If I run component from the DVD player to the 1400 and then to the TV with no other video conections to the TV will the up conversion give me the on screen display for the 1400 set-up menus? Will my picture still look as good going through the 1400? If you do not use the receiver for your video, how do you get the OSD to your TV? My TV only has one component in. I just want to make sure I have the cables Ill need when I bring it home.

I sure hope the RX-V1400 blows the Onkyo out of the water! I didn't get to listen to the Yamaha on Polk speakers.

I love my Yamaha 1400 and sound through my Polks is astounding!
Once you use MONITOR OUT from your Yamaha it will display the OSD on your TV.

If you go to the MANUAL SETUP> OPTION MENU> select DISPLAY there is a COMPONENT UPCONVERSION option to select ON or OFF. Select ON if you running everything through receiver and then upconverting signals through component monitor out.

I'm not using component yet 'cause I've an old TV with composite input only but I've heard that component upconversion works really great and
people found an improvement in signal quality as well. I recommend you to go ahead and do it.

I really invite you at www.hometheaterspot.com YAMAHA we have a really big YAMAHA community there and all questions are answered there. My username is VCHT15 there. Any help no problem!;)

I have been playing with my 1400 for a bit now and have to say the ONLY thing I am not trhilled about with it is the OSD.

I am running 2 component video inpputs in and one component video out to the TV. I am not able to get the OSD to display over the video image. Instead the only way to see the OSD is when the entire screen goes gray. I have changed the settings but nothing seems to help. I don't believe the OSD will be overlayed on the video image unless the source is NON-component video.

I have the component cable plugged into the 480i/480p/1080i input on my TV.
I hope I am wrong and I am just overlooking something, if I am someone let me know.

Ok this is what I get with the settings you suggested. if I simply change the volume I see nothing. If I am watching a Digital OTA channel and adjust the volume then quickly change the station to a standard def channel the screen goes gray for a short second and I can see the volume level just before the picture changes to the new channel. Once on that new channel if I change the amp volume I see no information. If I change the volume and then change back to a OTA digital channel I see no OSD.

Conclusion: OSD only works if changing from Digital OTA station to standard definition station but only changes for a brief second while the receiver is changing from HD to standard def and is not pushing or processing any video signal.

I called yamaha customer service and spent over an hour working on this with them. After trying many different configurations and settings we found out that the OSD will not overlay on video that is from a comp source. The only way to get the OSD to overlay on top of video is if the source is not from component. The OSD will overlay if the source is lets say S-video to the 1400 then component to the TV but a straight component to 1400 then component input on TV will not overlay.

So for those of you like me that do not run any video inputs that aren't component into the 1400 forget about getting the OSD to overlay the video source.

I just got a 1400 for Christmas and love it thus far. However, from reading on here I get the idea that I can hook up cable to it; I have no clue how. If I can, please tell me how; If I can't, please disallusion me! thanks

I also assume that the OSD would work if my equipment is connected to my receiver via: optical, s-video, composite?

Yes you can hook up cable if you have a cable box that is will let you run something besides standard coax from it. If you have a cable box that will output S-video have that go into the 1400 then send it to your tv via another S-video cable. Make sence?

Yes the OSD will work if the video source is coming from soemthing other than component.

Ok; I get it. I guess I just need to find a cable box, now. Thanks for the info. If I don't have a cable box but want to hear the sound through my receiver, but could care less about the graphics, is there something else I could do? thanks

Yeah if your TV has an audio out you could input that into a audio input on the receiver.

So cable goes into your TV - audio out of TV into receiver.
