May want to look at August Rush. August's Rhapsody is a really good song, and rest of track isn't bad either. Not into soundtracks, but I remember that song.

The only music I have bought along this line are the releases for HBO's True Blood series. There are some good tunes on them, and they sound better than the same song on the CD put out by the artist.

I highly recommend the group, The Handsome Family, that did the theme song for True Detective ("Far From Any Road"). The CD's I have are Singin' Bones and In The Air. It's a husband and wife team - he writes the music and plays most of the instruments and she (a novelist) writes the lyrics.

Each song is a gothic short story, not like anything I've ever heard, but really good.

Just know the difference between a soundtrack and a score, as you will occasionally find both. The following link is a good explanation of the differences. http://incidentallymusic.blogspot.com/2012/11/score-vs-soundtrack.html?m=1

There are tons of great movie scores, I have hundreds of them as this is my favorite genre of music. Putting together lists is really tough especially in this genre because there is so much out there and it's more diverse than any other music genre you'll find. I'll list my favorites and recommendations below.

Note: I'm generally not a fan of 'greatest hits' or compilation albums, but they're a good way to 'get to know' your composers and get a feel for their style without breaking the bank buying multiple soundtracks.

    Compilation Albums w/links to Amazon:
    Ennio Morricone - Platinum Collection
Danny Elfman - Music For a Darkened Theater
Danny Elfman - Music For a Darkened Theater Volume Two
    Hans Zimmer - Film Music
    John Williams - Greatest Hits

    My person favorite individual scores:
The Battlestar Galactica Series - Bear Mccreary (I'd start with Season 2)
The Bourne Series - John Powell (I'd start with Ultimatum)
Batman (1989 Tim Burton) - Danny Elfman
    Edward Scissorhands - Danny Elfman
V for Vendetta - Dario Marianelli
The Good The Bad and The Ugly - Ennio Morricone
Once Upon a Time in The West - Ennio Morricone
    Gladiator - Hans Zimmer
    Batman Begins - Hans Zimmer
Black Hawk Down - Hans Zimmer
    Inception - Hans Zimmer
Blood Diamond - James Newton Howard
Band of Brothers - Michael kamen
Meet Joe Black - Thomas Newman

I noticed a few John Williams scores in your initial post. I'm not gonna get into why, but I'll admit I'm not as big of a fan as most people are and so can't really add much there. I've got about 25 of his scores but tend to gravitate more towards the compilations albums I linked above.

I'll also recommend a few non movie scores. Check out Two Steps From Hell, they're a couple guys that write a bunch of music you often see in movie previews and such. Start with the album 'Invincible' and if you like them go from there. Also check out the album 'Serenada Schizophrana' from Danny Elfman, not a score but a great album. Finally, check out 'The New Moon in the Old Moon's Arms' by Michael Kamen.

I could go on and on recommending more albums and artists, but I'll leave it at this for now.

Shawshank is another Thomas Newman score I think, one of the most underrated composers out there IMO

Blade Runner-Vangelis...Risky Business-Tangerine Dream...O Brother Where Art Thou-Various Bluegrass...Pulp Fiction-Various Songs. Four I just found at thrift stores recently. Many more great ones out there. I don't usually buy soundtracks or scores, but will usually grab one on vinyl too if VG+ or better.

Quoting @AsSiMiLaTeD whole post because I am in virtually 100% agreement with all of his suggestions.
Even on the John Williams views. The lone exception being the Episode IV score. But I think that is strictly the sci-fi geek in me more than the music fan.

I think I was the only person in my HS with a "system" in my car demoing it with the 1989 Tim Burton Batman score by Elfman.
Funny part is, my first exposure to Elfman wasn't his movie scores but his brother's band, Oingo Boingo.

Another couple I like are "Somewhere in Time" by John Barry(heavily influenced by Sergei Rachmaninoff's "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini"...

and "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou"... just a lot of fun to listen to.

Great list here. I have had the Band Of Brothers soundtrack for over a decade, very well done indeed, highly recommend it.
