Take a chance on this Oppo?

There is an Oppo 105 available that won't power up since a power surge according to the owner. Would this unit have enough "protection" that a surge may have caused minimal damage to the extent that repairs may not be too expensive?

So what's the asking price? You could call Oppo ans ask them what they think. I have all my HT stuff plugged into a Panamax when in use, and unplug everything when not in use.A fried 105 what a shame.

Not expensive ? Unless you have the ability to fix it yourself, your looking at probably at least 300 bucks to have someone else fix it....assuming it can be too. Plus shipping and insurance both ways. I'd steer clear....

What one considers a "power surge " too can also be called into question. Simple power surges should not do a lot of damage, however if that power surge came from a lightning strike, it may be toast.

Oppo is renowned for its customer service. I'd reach out to them for a quote. Might do a fixed price exchange for a refurb unit. Conversely, if the price is low enough, I'd consider popping it open and looking for a blown fuse....

How bad did it get cooked? If it is limited to just the power board you could fix it simple if Oppo will sell you a new board. The power board is the one on the left

I contacted Oppo about my dvd player that has a failed power supply board. They said that I could purchase the extended warranty for $50, ship the unit to them and they would fix it, no fuss no muss.

How much was the asking price? I've only seen 105's go for as low as $750-800. If the asking price was around $500 then it still might be a good price after paying to get it repaired.

If it's actually an easy repair then it could be a very good buy for a DIYer . If the MOV / fuse in the power supply opened up before any downstream damage then it will be a simple repair.

The real question is...Did they have the $1199 player connected to a power surge protector with an equipment warranty? I guess not?

Sorry you missed this one Bob. From what WL mentioned, has anyone here ever actually filed a claim on damaged electronics that were plugged into their surge protector, were they reimbursed for damaged components or just sent a new surge protector?
