worst sounding concert ever

With the passing of Jack Bruce it got me thinking how fortunate it was that I got to see Cream in their prime.1st show I think was at Hunter College Downtown NYC then the Fillmore East. These shows were loud marathons of great playing and soloing. Now the end comes Rolling Stone Magazine really ripped them badly. So now we have the farewell tour. MSG sold out so we went to Philly at the Spectrum to see them. They were placed on a rotating stage and because they didn't have the hanging line array p,a, systems of today you only heard them when they faced you for that fleeting minute or so then it sounded like a train leaving or just rumble. By far now I've been to hundreds of concerts and heard muddy, tinny, overbearing p.a. systems but by far this was the worst idea ever just to squeeze more people into the arena and it sucked. I think Blind Faith did the same thing w/ similar results. Any one out there see these shows and let me know if I'm right or not.

I go to metal concerts, so inherently, I haven't ever been to one that sounded good. Last show I went to was Cannibal Corpse. I should bring a db meter to one sometime. Always sounds like if they just turned it down a bit that it would be a lot more enjoyable SQ wise.

The worst I've ever attended was one of the two Beatles concerts in Indianapolis in September of 1964. Despite George Harrison's comments to the contrary, the screaming of the fans was so loud and obnoxious that none of us could actually hear or enjoy the music.

It was a "happening" of historic proportions, but a "music concert" -- no way in my humble opinion.

  • Guys I've been to plenty of bad shows including The Grateful Dead who were just horrible and it was the 1st concert I ever walked out on and caught Boz Scaggs at a Blues bar down in North Beach in S.F. The 2nd and absolutely worst was Van Morrison at the Great American Music Hal in S.F. He was so drunk he almost fell off the stage and I knew this was garbage, I went straight to the box office and demanded my money back and got or else I would have caused a riot. No I was just talking sound systems in general. The flip side is best in my opinion would be Pink Floyd's true quad surround, GD Wall Of Sound and at the same show The Who used their own system which was awesome and they played rings around the Dead this day and deserved top billing.

I saw Dream Theater a few years ago at this concert hall in Huntington, NY, called, "The Paramount." It was so loud, and because all the walls are brick, the sound was completely intelligible. SOOO much crosstalk and echo that I couldn't even recognize some of the songs without plugging my ears first. What a shame, because the venue is actually pretty beautiful. But I'll never go to another show there, ever.

Music concert or no.... I would have given up a nut to be able to say I saw The Beatles perform live. As it is, I closed my eyes for the opening of the Vegas show, "LOVE" and imagined what that must have been like. Sadly, unless they do a command performance for the Almighty, those moments will be as close as I get.

I've seen hundreds of concerts and most of them were very good, some exceptional. One of the worst was Blue Oyster Cult in the mid-80's, the only guy who could keep a beat was Buck Dharma. The other guys looked and sounded like they just woke up after passing out after a three day binge, it always sucks when you really want to see someone, I listened to them a lot in college, but they end up stinking up the joint, walking out half way through. I hate to say it, but Van Morrison also sucked when I saw him. Some of the best were Bob Marley in '78, Peter Tosh about the same era, Wishbone Ash in '75, The Stones various times, The Who, believe it or not Billy Idol who blew the roof off the House of Blues in Chicago, J. Geils mid-70's, Bob Dylan who can have magical shows (and some not so magical), Jeff Beck, John Mayall

I guess that is one advantage of being my age -- I was old enough to attend the concert, and young enough to appreciate the "happening" that I experienced!

The fact was, however, that even then I was more a fan of folk and jazz than of rock music.

With that said: When the Beatles produced "Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," they changed the game.

Triumph at the Lakeland Civic Center in the 80's... Loved Triumph and it was a A+ effort show - but it was like listening in a metal bathtub. Terrible acoustics - I never saw another show tere.

Another top-ten concert of all time was Patti Smith at the Oriental Theatre in Milwaukee in about 1978, absolutely magical. Johnny Winter was also unbelievable. Pink Floyd in '75 was pretty good, and about that same time Jefferson Starship was so bad, Grace Slick actually appeared drunk to the point where they had to stop the show after about four songs. Others that were exceptional were Richard Thompson, Gillian Welch, Dave Rawlings Machine (with John Paul Jones), Lucinda Williams at the House of Blues New Orleans (with Charlie Sexton), Gregory Isaacs at the House of Blues New Orleans, Hawkwind around '77 or '78, and Jack White's various iterations, Joe Bonamassa.

I must have seen one of Dylan's not so majical shows. He totally sucked(and I'm a BIG Dylan fan). Could not understand any lyrics and it was hard to even tell one song from the next. It was like a bad movie, we hung in there hoping it would get better and then we could hardly wait for it to end! The venue was not at fault as I've seen several concerts there and they were all good.
Yep, my name really is Bob.

Worst concert I ever saw was Fleetwood Mac in around late 70's...They came without a opening band then tried to drag each song out to 10 minutes and they didn't seem to care, at the time it was the most I ever spent for tickets and several people left me holding extra tickets...so I call my cousins up and gave the rest away for free (but that is what you do for family). So I spent a lo of money on one of my favorite groups and was the worst one I ever saw :)

Voltz, I was remembering on the way home from work that Fleetwood Mac was another crappy show I saw also. I saw them at Jazzfest in New Orleans and it was like they had not rehearsed at all. Couldn't even stay to watch after a couple songs. But I also remembered that Aerosmith in '75 rocked like no tomorrow.

  • Aerosmith Permanent Vacation on 1/18/1988, thank you Google!!! I remember it was on the WSU (Pullman WA) campus inside of some concrete tomb. After those heavy metal gods Dokken quit playing and Aerosmith started, I started looking for the exits. And this was with a fair amount of alcohol on board which makes everything better!!

Funny how the memory works. I forgot until just now that Neil Young solo was in the top ten of all time, I paid a ton for a good ticket but worth every penny. Robert Plant was outstanding. Climax Blues Band in the 70's was also a great show.

Saw BOC in the "Black and Blue" tour at the Nassau Coliseum where they went on after Sabbath (Dio era). Every one of my friends agree with me that BOC was the better act, by far. Between "Godzilla" and "Astronomy" how could it get any better?
