  • A pair of Vandersteen 1's from local Craigslist.
The owner, who I had never met before, wanted to give them to me for free. Since it was Friday, I finally talked him into accepting $50 cash to take his family to a fish fry (a Wisconsin tradition).
He had just purchased new Vandersteen 1's, and the old ones had a bad woofer surround. I took them home and repaired the separated woofer surround with some black silicone automotive trim adhesive. Sounded great, used them for years. I actually preferred them to my Vandy 2's.

When I was in HS, my uncle upgraded his 2 channel rig to a pair of Klipsch Cornwalls.
He gave me his Bolivar Speaker Works Model 18s. Those paired with a Yamaha CR-620 I picked up for the princely sum of $5 at a garage sale was my first foray into "hi-fi". I was smitten from then on.

Set up the Christmas tree and I will see you in December. As for the OPPO BDP-103D, I see you have the Sony BDP-S5100, lets not be greedy now. Santa has a OPPO 970H and Mrs. Claus can live with it.

Okay, I won't be greedy. Bring your Mrs. with you, and she and my Mrs. can chit chat while we enjoy the tunes. But, if the Mrs.'s want to, they can join us. (BTW, I would prefer the Paradigm speakers in black ash. If that's not available, rosenut will do. Actually, ANY color will do. Lastly, I have the all of the Lord of the Rings trilogy extended version in blu-ray. We could have a LOTR marathon!!)

The little bottle of "scratch" cleaner was inside the sub rolling around.
Never found that before inside any equipment.

Better is subjective. The 12's may be too big for my office. The 8T's seem a bit more "coherent" if that makes sense. Plus running off my 2252B may not be helping my 12B experience.

My uncle gave me an old Fisher integrated when I was in high school. I had that thing through the beginning of college. I used to rock the dorm room with it...even got a warning from the RA a couple of times. I only had a single speaker that I got for free from someone...I don't remember who.

By '86-'87Junior year my folks gave me a JC Penney's MCS rack system with some Marantz speakers. This was first CD player and I was ecstatic to say the least. I went to the record store and bought my first CD, Chick Corea Elektric Band, "Light Years." I used to love going to the used record /CD store on Grand River Ave right off the Mich State Univ campus. Those were good times.

Anybody have an A21 to hand out!

The only HT gear that was given to me was last Christmas my mommy gave me a 60" Samsung TV... guess she was trying to make up for all the years she treated her middle child like Charlie Brown.
When I was a kid my parents told me to turn it down. Now I'm an adult and my kids tell me to turn it down.

Right after college I was gifted a Carver Sonic Holography Generator and a Marantz 2250 from a buddy. When I finally "upgraded" to a modern JVC receiver/system, I re-gifted them to a different college buddy who had no stereo at the time. He just tossed them when he was done. I still kick myself for letting that Marantz go.

I've never been given any stereo equipment. I've given stuff away. Gave a friend a Def Tech sub and another a Yammie RX-V667 and another a pair of Monitor 4's. Maybe it will come back someday.
