Model 10 Distortion, especially certain frequencies

I have a Model 10 speaker which has audible distortion that affects higher frequencies. Some frequencies are especially distorted and actually emit a loud noise I would describe as a sine wave. This has occurred on recorded instruments such as slide guitar.

The pair of speakers have replaced mid range drivers but the tweeters are the original silk dome tweeters.

I am fairly certain the distortion is coming from the tweeter. Is this indicative of a bad tweeter or a bad crossover?

Thank you
Bryan

  • Hello,
Welcome to Polk's forum. From what you have described I would suspect a problem with the tweeter. Contact Polk's CS department for replacements, mention you are a CP member and you'll save.

If you think its one certain tweeter-you can always swap it with the other tweeter & see if it 'follows' the bad tweeter...Just a thought-to make sure it is definetly the tweeter. Try using a empty paper towel roll & listen to the tweeter.....Also if your planing on keeping the speakers this would be the ideal time to get the Better tweeters they have. Some are drop in replacements 10min job. Depending on what tweeter you have. Welcome to the Polk forum

  • Thanks for the quick replies guys. I'll swap the tweeters and see if the problem follows the tweeter. - If it is the tweeter, I was planning on picking up a used replacement on eBay. It's about $50 shipped. It would be nice to get the better tweeters but that would require replacing both at $100+ (so the timbre on both speakers match).

    Cheers
  • I believe the CP price for the tweeter is $48.00 each and free shipping, well worth the investment. You can replace just the distorted one and not be completely unmatched, then add a second as time permits.
    Just my two florin.
