Vintage Marantz...good deal?

A good deal?

Marantz 2265 Fully functioning. Everything looks to be in great condition. Nothing has been replaced, serviced or recapped...so all original. $250

It is the regular 2265 not the 2265B.

Seems like a great deal. I do understand that vintage equipment may need serviced at any time.

Would it PROPERLY power my SDA 2A's?

Thanks all...

I would say no to powering SDA's unless you are listening to backround dinner music.

I agree, especially since the 2As are 4-Ohm speakers.

I thought these old Marantz were 4 ohm capable. When I posted about a 2270 a few months ago, I thought a couple folks said it would be fine.

I wouldn't think 5 watts would make a huge difference. But I literally have no idea, so thank you for all the feedback so far.

The Marantz will power them fine at lower to mid volumes, just that when you start cranking the volume it may run out of steam. Just don't go crazy on the volume dial or add an amp to the old girl.

I have the SDA 2A studios in a 11'x13' room right now and powering them with a HK 3490. They actually sound really good, but just when I want to go a bit louder...I don't because I feel like the receiver is up enough.

I want to be able to go a bit louder. So I don't think I need the king kong of amps, because my room is so small, but I need something a bit tougher than I got.

I want to go either vintage (Marantz, Sansui, Pioneer etc...) or tubes in this system.

They sounded the best with a Dared pre and the HK amp stage, but again...I need something just a little tougher for the amp and it sounds like the Marantz 2265 might not be it.

Try it. Ya neva know till ya do. I tried to power my 2b's with my Marantz 2252b & at low volume it was just ok. Turned it up & at 10-10:30 on dial it just didnt have it at all. Tried it with a Yammy cr1040 & it was a tad better. But then put the Adcom555 back on it. It was a fun experience just to say to myself i tried. I found out

Agrees with all, a little short in the britches power wise. That being said, those blue lights glowing softly with the lights down low. PURE ART!!

If you don't think the HK 3490 @ 120 watts has enough power for the volumes you're looking for I don't think the Marantz @ 65 watts will make you any happier.

Look for a B&K amp to add to your HK, perhaps, if warmth is what you're looking for.

I've driven a lot of speakers with my 2215 Marantz......you'd be surprised at how much (or little) power that you really need.

There is that Anthem MCA-20 in the Flea Market from a decent seller.... Maybe he will cut you a Polkie price on it....

But I'd be curious how that Marantz would sound... love their looks. Wish I could find a non functional unit that looked nice for display...

As another thought... maybe hit up MHardy and try to pry something from his wall of wonders to drive your SDA's.... I'm sure he's got something that's up to the task lol...

Yea, but I just sold my B&K :)

Actually, not in a big hurry, but eventually will probably get a vintage receiver or some tubes again.

The SDA's sounded best when I had that little Dared as a pre-amp. Just sold that, too. Starting to miss the bugger already!

Yea, I don't know a lot about vintage, but do understand that 65W today aren't even close to the 65W on some of those older units.

65 watts is 65 watts. One that does high current to get it done will drive most
speakers better, but there is no other magic involved.
A lot of modern HT gear ratings are NOT rated the same, since the standards
were passed for 2 channel. Quite often they are rated one channel at a time rather than all channels driven, and use peak rather than RMS ratings.
There were laws passed back in the 70's to prevent that nonsense, and now
multichannel is common. so it's a case of shady advertising.
Don't even get me started on car audio!
Most quality 2 channel gear has honest enough ratings. So a modern 2 channel
at 65 WPC is going to perform just fine.
