are heavier weighted LPs better ?

I just got my brand new copy of Gram Parson's Grievous Angel and besides the obvious weight in just handling the record is there any sonic difference w/ differing gram weighted albums ? Again this is brand new LP and needed a razor to open the thing so I have nothing to compare it to. Some forums said it was the pressing plants decision for the weight and anything over 130 grams would be enough to meet production standards.

If you are talking about sound quality. No. The 180 gram records is nothing special. I have British pressings that are wafer thin and sound great and 180 gram records that sound like c-r-a-p. Heavier records may be bit more durable and are definitely less prone to warping, but it really comes down to the mastering and the sound production.

Durability and resistance to warping as @pongshi said. I have experienced bad vinyl on both sides of the weight spectrum.

a priori, no. The current fad of heavy vinyl, I think, is driven by:

    * Nostalgia (in the early days of LPs - i.e., the 1950s - they were thick and heavy).
    * Reaction against the horrid RCA "Dynaflex" records of the early 1970s and the arguably even more horrid late-1970s "energy crisis" records pressed on recycled vinyl.
    * The commonly held hifi perception that "heavier is better" (or its corollary, "quality is proportional to weight").

As said above, some of the modern heavy pressings are good, some are not. You pays your money, you takes your chance ;- )

I don't know if they sound better ( I doubt it). I know I like when I get a 180g because it feels better in my hands and feels durable. I notice they arent as warped as the thinner stuff.
