It seems that The Who have garnered the market in the nostalgia music in commercials. I just heard a telco co. commercial not to mention cars, light bulbs, all the CSI shows and who knows how many others world wide. Thing is this has been going on for ages now and some say it started w/ the Coke commercial but that was their own song. Can anyone remember when all this started and you have to agree it's a marketing windfall, and great idea to bring you back to that certain time in life through music.

been going on for decades now... I remember the "fly the friendly skies" commercial featuring "Rhapsody in Blue", which I believe goes back to the 1920's and George Gershwin.

I think the reason we seem to recognize it more is because we know the music.

It's been going on for quite some time now. If I remember Chevy was using Led Zeppelin in their commercials back in the 90's

In part I agree with John, but the over the top jumping point would be the 80's where cutting overhead and maxing out profits was priority one. It was cheaper to use old tunes than pay for jingle writers. Now you hear just released music along with several that are only a few years old. The new Acura commercial plays the instrumental version of Pimpim all over the world by Ludacris. And how many times have you seen a movie trailer with music that never plays in the actual movie, but adds a bit of plazzas to peek intrest.

  • For the most part I agree but not knowing how old you guys are I'm telling you this has been going on I think since maybe the late '60s into the 70's for sure. Which one and when was this jumping off point is the mystery here. Yes because we know the tunes which is exactly the point like the so-called subliminal ads that tried in every way possible to induce/ entice you to buy whatever they were selling. The music comes in to rekindle a part of your life, may it be a 1st date, great ball game or buying that car you always wanted and now you can because that tune made you do it. ...lol

  • I remember they used a song by DONOVAN "Wear your Love like Heaven" on a comerical for a purfume called Heaven Scent in the late 6o's. Could be wrong but one thing I remember about those fumes, they were bad. Had a friend that used the crap, she smelled bad. That stuff would suck the air from your lungs being around those fumes. If thats Heaven scent then Hell is for me. LOL
