LSi9 Refinish top & sides

I just got a pair of LSi9's and one top is very scratched and the sides show some wear. They sound great and I am willing to put in the time and money to bring them back to beauty. What I know so far is the side panels are MDF with veneer and they are glued on and if I could put on new solid wood (not MDF) sides it may change the sound. Does anyone have any experience in refinishing these speakers or a site that would be helpful in this undertaking?
