I would disagree. You cannot put a blanket statement such as "All vintage receivers sound better than modern ones" or as put on that website "Today's hi-fi is often mediocre at best". There is modern equipment that will blow away the best of the best from the 70's and 80's.afterburnt wrote: »They didn't speak a word of English, they were from South Carolina.

I've read that and most of the other stuff written there. If anyone believes that they are as delusional as the author.Political Correctness'.........defined

We are not talking about all vintage receivers are better than modern ones. Most of the old stuff was not to good. Its how things got from the original "sound". Like adding more watts really does not make music better. Kinda like a loud friend, the louder is not better. Most modern sound is phony, not real. Kinda like people nowdays, there not real. Thats what i see in music, it doesn't have a real sound. Again thats what I hear. Good to see what other people have to say.Joey Ward

I don't understand what you're saying.
"Most of the old stuff was not too good." then "Most modern sound is phony, not real." is contradictory and confusing.afterburnt wrote: »They didn't speak a word of English, they were from South Carolina.

Thanks.
I guess in general he sort of makes sense, but he seems to be comparing mass market gear in the 80s onward, to earlier more limited gear. Not a fair comparison in my mind. Plus, it is just silly to think technology peaked in the late 60s. He reminds me of grumpy old man who thinks things were better when he was younger.Lumin X1 file player, Westminster Labs interconnect cable

It's just like someone saying I drove a Pontiac when I was a teen and have fun memories with my cute little girlfriend in the back seat.
That 40 year old car is the best.
All modern cars with over 100 safety features are mediocre compared to that Pontiac.

Thanks for the comments but nobody is reading what that site is talking about. "http://select45rpm.com/pages/hifi/hifi-golden-years.html
Since its been said here about living in the past, l would like to tell a short story about the past. When I was in high school I had a history teacher who gave us a reading homework assignment. The next day in class I was ask a question about what I read and when I got done with my answer the teacher said to me" that was not what was in the chapter". The teacher was right, I did not read the whole chapter and was talking about my personal view point which didn't have much to do with what was in the chapter.
If the link does not work type in select45rpm.com it should take you there. Please read the information then comment. There is alot to read.
Thank you.Joey Ward -

I tried, I tried skimming, and I finally gave up. He lost me when describing six or seven generations of amplifiers.
Superficially, I'd say that there never in the history of consumer electronics been a shortage of junk sold as "quality". To say that nobody can make anything but junk now is ludicrous. -
It took me a few days to read all the different stuff on the site. From IC's in the receivers and why the sound is different from each, etc...
Homework: Read everything on the site not just afew pages.

No one who has spent some quality time listening to commercial and top-end consumer gear produced from the 1930s (with the advent and spread of popularity of 'talkies') to very early 1960s would ever pick 1967 to 1977 as the zenith of audio reproduction. In fact, some of the early all-silicon solid state stuff (mid-1960s through early 1970s) is some of the most awful sounding stuff sold for profit -- even fro the best manufacturers of the time.
Interestingly, although germanium transistors were so fragile as to make their use in high(er) powered hifi impractical, there were some pretty decent sounding early solid state components built using them. -

I have to give some credit, for what it's worth, to some of the vintage gear out there. Some of those units built in the 60's and 70's , still power up and work. Maybe not as clean sounding as new ,but hey, the Japanese knew how to build the hi-fi gear. Not sure if any of the Chinese stuff made nowadays will still work in 40 or 50 years. Time will tell I suppose. I will also give the Germans some credit, those old post war Neumann professional recording studio mics are still__ some of the finest ever made.

I want what this dude is smoking.
Those manufacturers truly dedicated to HiFi have worked to improve things throughout their histories.
I am not talking Yamaha or Pioneer or Sony.
I am talking about folks like Nelson Pass, John Curl, Bob Carver, Dan D'Agostino, Dan Hafler, Mark Levinson...etc etc etc.
These are the folks I look to when I want to see the state of hi-fi.
I will agree with one aspect of the horrible article.
Consumers demanded smaller and more convenient. And sound suffered for THOSE devices.
For the enthusiasts that never wanted a compromise, the products being offered today are as good and better than anything else in history with some rare exceptions here and there."Some people find it easier to be conceited rather than correct."

Not being able to even get a receiver at the time I went for a Lafayette 50 watt amplifier,my Dual 1225 and Criterion100s. While low to mid-fi at the time FM was in it's infancy and only late night at that. IF the cash was there I would have gone w/ the 2000 series Marantz for sure. Now that avrs for the most part have shown their weaknesses w/ wattage ratings and need an auxillary amplifier w/ my Yamaha RX-V665 which has a boatload of differing house sounds which is a gross waste of time and could have spent their efforts on more wattage than lame effects. This is why I'm very happy w/ my mid '70s level 2nd tier Nikko 6065 a true 34 watter.2chl- Adcom GFA- 555-Onkyo P-3150v pre/amp- JVC-QL-A200 tt- Denon 1940 ci cdp- Adcom GFS-6 -Modded '87 SDA 2Bs - Dynamat Ext.- BH-5- X-Overs VR-3, RDO-194 tweeters, Larry's Rings, Speakon/Neutrik I/C- Cherry stain tops Advent Maestros,Ohm model E
