Pioneer Elite SC-75 set-up questions

I bought an open box display unit SC-75 for the GF, and got a really sweet deal but it was bare bones: no remote or cal. mic, etc., just the unit. I want to initially set it up for 2-channel until I can get the HT set-up figured out for her place. I also want to use a co-ax cable for a CD player, and I'm having trouble getting the unit to switch from the DVD coax input setting that's apparently the default. She's probably going to use her i-pad alot, and I understand there is an app so she can use the i-pad for a basic remote. If anyone has suggestions for a universal remote I'd appreciate it, or will the i-pad app do the trick and I won't have to worry about getting a universal? Anyway, I'm wondering if someone who's familiar with this unit can give me some help with some set-up questions. PM me if you can. Thanks in advance.

You should be able to do the same programing that's on the remote with the controls behind the front panel.

Okay, thanks I wasn't sure if the remote had additional features, sure seemed like it. Weird without a remote but I'll just keep at it.

The remote does have additional features, but the programming features are the same. You need to get into the program that assigns the inputs by pushing the Menu button, then select System Setup, then Input Setup.

You should try and find the mcacc mic somewhere, even to borrow. On my SC receiver as soon as you plug the mic in it starts the calibration and you're on your way.

The calibration program is one thing and should be used only to establish a base line for surround sound with fine tuning done by ear/SPL meter. Right now, he needs to get into the menu program.

The mic is the fastest way without a remote, I wonder if any 1/8 mic would work just to get into the menu. Once you are in the mcacc menu from inserting the mic you could use the buttons on the front to set things up.

Called Pioneer tech support as I was still having difficulty trying to figure out the signal select, coax from the CD player issue. They informed me the signal select in that instance can only be done with the physical remote or the free "i-control AV5" app. The GF downloaded the app at my place, as she doesn't have the internet at the moment. But the internet is required for the app to function, so I'll have to use RCA interconnects for the CD player until she gets the internet (which should be soon), or take the receiver to my place and change the signal select to coaxial for the CD player with my internet connection and hope it retains that setting while I take it back to her place. There are apparently only a few functions that you cannot perform on the front panel, but the signal select choosing coax from CD player is apparently one of them. Oh well, worse things have happened..... Just glad I got a really sweet deal on the receiver or I'd be P.O.'d about that missing remote.

You dont need Internet service to use the app once it's on her ipad, what you need is a wifi adapter or router pluged into the ethernet jack on the back of the receiver and connect the ipad to the wifi of the adapter or router.

Thanks a lot. I wish the Pioneer tech would've told me that, I appreciate it. I'm new to the i-pad app as you can tell. But seems like it may be nice for the GF as she'll be playing tunes off her i-pad alot and so she can use it as her wireless remote also.

No problem this is my second pioneer with mcacc so I'm used to it now but the first time you set one up it can be confusing. Check out this Mcacc dedicated thread that should get you started in the right direction. avsforum.com/forum/90-receivers-amps-processors/1112470-official-pioneer-mcacc-thread.html
She will be fine with the ipad I use my ipod touch 4 through airplay sometimes and it works good. What speakers are you pairing with the Elite? It has some good power for an avr.

I set it up with LSi-9's in 2-channel for the moment while I figure out her room set-up. Her room is a really weird set up with an open concept but a wood stove in one area and so many openings to other areas. Sort of hard to even describe but it'll be a challenge to set up HT I think. Anyway, the system sounds really good so far, that's really a pretty nice receiver. In the past I picked up LSi-Fx's, LSi-7's and a LSi-C, so I can do HT as soon as I get my learn on a little more. Starting easy, lol. Won't get the CD player on the coaxial cable yet, but that sounds decent with RCA IC's. Hooked up her i-pad by its cable and that also sounds decent although I need to get her going on some hi-def downloads I think. BTW, would you suggest the Pioneer wi-fi adapter? I see its a proprietary item that they don't give away. Or should I just get a router since she'll be getting internet in the near future anyway?

Wow those are some nice speakers, I bet they sound awesome with the sc75. Yeah I would put some good quality flac on a usb and play them through the front usb input on elite, it sounds pretty good on my sc-1227 and your sc75 should have an even better dac. You can also convert flac to alac with dbpoweramp and she can put them on her ipad. I don't have any experience with the pioneer wifi adapter its probably just plug and play but you have to get a router at some point anyway.

To be picky....the fastest way to get to the menu is to push the menu button behind the panel bypassing the need to first plug in the mic and since he doesn't have the mic to start with I'm not sure why you even brought it up.

What CDP is this that you feel the DAC in the AVR is better?

She has an old Samsung DVD/CD player/recorder, she uses as a CD player that surprisingly has decent SQ, at least for her purposes. I had a real nice coax cable that I tried on her prior receiver, and the difference was quite noticeable from RCA IC's. Assuming it would also be the case with the SC-75. I have an old Denon 2910 that I may give her and that may change the equation.
