Subwoofer

Hi,
I have a Laptop computer for which I have recently bought a speaker system for (the factory speakers are horrible). A 6.5 inch sub was included. Over Christmas i got a Reciever and I hoped to connect the sub to it.
My first obstacle was getting a headphone to RCA cable (the input on the sub is equivilent to a headphone jack and the jack on the reciever is an RCA). Needless to say I found one and tried hooking the sub up to the designated pre-out. No sound came out. Then I hooked it up the the "tape output" section on the back of the reciever then it worked. It is nice that it works but I cannot control the level of bass from the reciever. Only manually from the actual sub can I control the levels. Why is this? why won't it work in the pre-out.
Thank you for your responses,
Chuck

do you know what model sub are you connecting to your onkyo? -
The brand of the sub is Altec Lansing.

have you turned the sub out-put of the reciever on in it's set-up menu?
