    A stereo cartridge will work with a mono album but cartridges made specifically for mono works better.

    You guys know the trick for a poor man's mono cartridge right? Double Y connector. Works magic on a mono record!

    A lot of noise on a record is actually out of phase between the left and right channel. So with mono records, you can use the double-Y cord trick to sum the left and right sides together, then split them apart again. Net result is much of the noise disappears, with zero loss of fidelity. First time I tried it, it was pretty jaw-dropping.

    A mono cartridge is definitely better, but the double-Y cords are pretty awesome.
