NPR's War on Music

NPR has again taken more music off the Atlanta airwaves. Awhile back WRAS was taken over by NPR for a completely talk format. Now on the other two NPR stations, classical / symphonic has been replace on mornings / mid days with more talk. I don't want to make this a politically based post, as I tend to agree with NPRs 'save the world' outlook more vs. say the Fox News 'fend for yourself' outlook, but I digress. Music is music....I don't need to hear more smarmy Terry Gross interviews, or more F'ing cooking shows on the weekends.
I will say I love Car Talk, but messing with the music ain't cool. Thus, I am starting a grass roots movement. Stay tuned...

I guess the EIB Network is completely out for you then... B)
I only listen to talk radio in the car, as music sucks on the radio I have in my car.

Many moons ago, NPR axed a great Bluegrass/Country music program on WAMU (American University) in the Wash. D.C. market. After that, Eddie Stubbs left the area, went to Nashville and got on the radio there. I absolutely hate Diane Hatchetface Rehm's holier than thou, flatulent, talk program ! :s

Duuuuuude. I have to interject. Diane holds some of the best conversations with people ever, and always does a very good job of keeping different views under control during the conversation. I miss hearing her everyday as my local NPR sucks the big one. Really, who wants to hear hotorculture day every freaking Thursday on Iowa's 'River to River'??? WTF. Tom Ashbrook's On Point is my favorite, but we only get the first hour here. At least I get my Rome on AM from 11-2 again finally.

With that, I really love Bob Dorr on the weekends on NPR, great classic rock show.

NPR in general is a failure everywhere I have heard it. My question is why are taxpayers footing the bill for it anyway.

There's very little government funding of public radio (including NPR, APM, PRI, and the local stations) any more -- which is why they're always begging for support.

Vermont public radio is very, very good -- besides a dedicated classical music network of transmitters (digital.vpr.net/programs/vpr-classical), the "talk" side of the network has three very good locally produced music programs - "My Place" (the history of rock and modern popular music), "All The Traditions" (which is just that -- heavily biased towards area talent) and a Friday night jazz program that is also quite eclectic.

The former two programs stream -- taste 'em at http://www.vpr.net/music-player/

They (also) have the absolute best (most thorough and informative) weather forecasting I have ever heard anywhere in America. Their locally produced talk programming is very, very good, as well (much better than NHPR, I've gotta say). Their morning news local host is a Deadhead; much of their morning interstitial music is live Dead.

    Vermont is an interesting state.
  • Good reason for NPR ?
    "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me".

....no, that's the name of the program. Reminds me of good, ol' school radio.

I've listened briefly to Diane Rehm on a couple of occasions while channel surfing. She may or may not be a "great interviewer". My problem with her is that I find myself wondering if she is going to pass away before she gets her comment or question out.

See....I have never heard heard Diane Rehm down here. Now Garrison Keeler.....I dunno. Whenever I catch myself listening to the Prarie Home Companion or whatever the hell it is....it reminds me I am getting old.

Diane can't talk (spasmodic dysphonia) + (head up her keister) and Garrison K. just plain can't sing. Whoever told him that he could, is a rotten liar !!! Mitt's gonna' kill Big Bird, as soon as he wins an election............ LMAO ! :D

If you can get past Diane's voice issues, she's quite a good interviewer. She rarely lets the guests get control, keeps them on topic. Google for a pic of her - she's a total babe for an older lady! Among the programs I enjoy are: "This American Life"' "Story Corps", "Car Talk (RIP Tom)", "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me", "All Things Considered", "The People's Pharmacy", "Fresh Air", and probably a few others I can't think of right now.

The thing that drives me nuts about TV news in general is that they turn every news story into an event, a drama, complete with logo, day xx of whatever.

Yes, poor Diane's voice problems make her sound like a little old lady (she's fairly old, but, as you say, she doesn't look it!)... which reminds me of something I stumbled across recently. The best thing about radio is... (at least in the pre-internet days) most of us never knew what the people behind the voices looked like.

A fairly decent music program that WAMU hasn't scuttled. (YET) http://wamu.org/programs/hot_jazz_saturday_night

Without NPR and Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me!... I'd have never known that Ypsilanti, MI's water tower is the world's most phallic building.
