Chromecast

I've been on the fence about picking up a Chromecast for awhile. Bestbuy has them for $30 this weekend, so I went and grabbed one this morning after eating my weight in food at Perkup Cafe. Totally digging it after ten minutes, currently casting the Iowa basketball game from watch espn on the computer to my living room TV. I'll say if anyone was like me, go grab one. I've dumped cable, and espn was the only thing making me regret that decision, now I have it again.

I'm sure we have more than a few members with a Chromecast, so any recomendations on 'apps' to use for it? I've done the browser cast and Youtube from my iPad. Pretty cool if you ask me.

ditto - chromecast user for for probably almost two years. I like it. Simple, that's nice. Can be a little skippy based on the amount of bandwidth you are allowed on your wifi. Great solution on the cheap though, hard to imagine a better one for the money spent.

I have to check it out I hate cable TV and only have basic cable because of Internet don't watch a lot of tv stream netflix and watch Blu rays and local stations and mostly in the winter time to much to do outdoors in the summer and fall to watch tv.

The only thing I miss about having expanded cable is ESPN and the Weather Channel so one of these might be right up my alley. Can't remember what Floyd Song off the Wall where Roger says got 13 channels of s..t on the tv to choose from now days it's more like got 370 channels of s..t on the tv to chose from. How does chromecast work? I might have to go to best buy and check it out tomorrow thanks for sharing Cody, go Hawks gonna log off now and head on over to best buy.com and check one out now.

^^ we nabbed a Firestick^^ for my M-I-L on Christmas, I have to go over and set it up for her soon, pretty easy Dskip? Seems like you're happy with it.

That's the thing about Chromecast, its not as much of a content provider as the Amazon stuff.

So I spent a bit more time with it since the initial thoughts. Very east to set up and configure, five minutes max? I've downloaded the Comedy Central, NBC, HBO, and ESPN apps. All of them cast to the tv, no lag or jumps for me at least. Having access to ESPN kind of completes my puzzle. I get most of the shows I want through Amazon and Netflix, and all of HBO. I don't see any reason to ever giving a cable company another dime ever again. Like I said initially, if you don't have one go and grab one, I don't think anyone would regret this one.

    @codyc1ark‌

I've thought about it but for us the cable bill monthly is so small and it gives us access to a DVR and for us Disney and all that jazz....

We've talked about it but thankfully everytime we call Uverse when our contract is up and we mention "cutting the cord" they've basically cut our bill to like 20-30 a month with our existing lineup, and that for us is a worthwhile cost...

If we didnt have Skye... we'd have cut the cord a long time ago.

Our internet is 2x more than our actual cable cost, but its all still manageable...

Now dont get me started on our CELL PHONE bill.....

They have like four Disney apps and a Nick Jr. app. I'd at least consider it, since most of the major networks will be doing this sooner rather than later I'd assume. Besides, you can still get the majors OTA. I'm sure with a Hulu account as well I'd be even more covered, but I have way to much to watch as it is.

The chrome cast looks pretty cool. I've considered it several times and just haven't pulled the trigger yet. @ Enders... I saw this from several news feeds and am intrigued. A new service from Dish (Sling TV) with up to 20 channels, Disney, Espn, and a couple add on packs at $5 each where I could get HGTV,DIY, others looks really intriguing. I'm tired of a $125 Dish bill and $85 internet as well. I am looking into a basic internet thru Comcast and dropping Dish to pick this up as a supplement to Netflix and Amazon....

Yeah I saw that Travis. My parents are likely going to get it. We are like 130 plus tax for our combined Internet and cable and of that 30 is the cable part.

Just so you know though, that dish thing can only do LIVE TV. You can't DVR anything

^ I am aware. Also only 1 stream at a time, be it TV, Kindle Fire, laptop, ect...

So it does have limitations, but to have access to ESPN which has kept a lot of people tied to their cable companies is a game changer I believe and will lead to many more options in the future hopefully much more ala carte than now.

Okay so I purchased the three month subscription for the Sling TV service and got the free fire tv stick deal, nice gesture. I have been watching all morning on my fire tv box and I am very impressed so far. Although there is no dvr functions this service works much like regular tv and and the picture quality is very good. I have been without cable for over 5 years and I think that the sling tv for $20 a month will be a great addition to my OTA service. Having access to espn and espn2 alone is worth the money to me. In addition the subscription also gets me access to "watchespn" on the fire tv and mobile devices, which is nice. TNT and TBS are also included and AMC is coming. I will be enjoying march basketball again as well as the NBA on TNT! I am pretty excited about this...some things are still to be desired but, being a new service I think it will only get better from here. I recommend you cable cutters give this service a try. You can also get it free for a couple of weeks but I wanted to take advantage of the free fire tv stick offer, I have been meaning to get another one for the living room anyway..two birds.

Update, AMC, IFC, and CNN are now included with the sling tv basic line-up.
