High Pitched Noise From Speakers

Not sure if this really belongs in the "Speaker" section, but that's where it's going for now.

My living room system consists of a Rotel RX-1050 and four in-ceiling speakers. I believe they are Klipsch, but they were here when I moved in and I've never bothered to take them out and see for sure. Also have a Sunfire Super Jr. sub.

Anyway, I get a constant, very high pitched buzz when the stereo is turned on. It's not terrible, but it's driving my dogs nuts :D Well, not sure about that, but it is very annoying and sometimes does make it impossible to listen to music. Luckily I don't listen in there very often, but I'd like to be able to do so. Doesn't sound like any type of ground loop I've ever had, but what else could it be? Also, I don't think it does it every time, but I know it's sometimes worse than other times.

Thanks for any ideas.

Have you tried hooking up 'normal' speakers to check if they have the same issue? If so then you know where to start looking for the problem. If not then there is an issue with the speakers or wiring.

I haven't done anything, but I probably should start there. I think I had a different stereo in the mix at one point and still had the issue, but I could be mistaken. Thanks.

Speakers can go bad but most likely pre or amp. Could be cables too.
Record it and upload in YouTube.
It's hard to hear from the post. ;)

Is it coming from all speakers or have you isolated it to one of the speakers? If its coming from all its probable a component...if its only one speaker then that speaker could be the culprit.

  • My advice is to remove the King Diamond from the system.
Other than that, I got nothing. Good luck. This is the kinda
thing that will drive you nuts.

Listening now with no ear splitting shrill. Yesterday it was bad enough that we couldn't stand it. The random gremlins are the worst. No critical listening done on this system, its strictly background-type music so not that big of a deal.

That being said I did hook up another speaker today. I would describe it as having somewhat of a shrill noise floor instead of the normal light static sound...if that makes any sense. Also heard a humming that was coming from the stereo so I think that identifies my culprit.

I may just live with it since I don't listen to it enough to invest much time into a solution, especially since it's sporadic.

    Haha. So true.

Two reasons I'm just going to live with it:
    1) I hardly ever listen to the system.
    2) It doesn't always have the noise. We actually had it on for a couple of hours today and not a sound.

If it were always like it was last night, Skip would be disappointed in me because I'd probably be online finding replacements already.

What's the chances you have one of those curly-Q hazmat light bulbs in the room?

That’s why I don’t, I bought all of my current gear based on technical parameters alone, such as specs and measurements."

More amazing Internet Science Pink Panther wisdom..."My DAC has since been upgraded from Mark Levinson to Topping."

There are a couple over the bar in the kitchen area which is basically the same room. So turn the lights off/on and see if I get the noise with the lights on?

I was also thinking it could be the cable box. Pretty sure the cable box was on last night and I know it wasn't on today. I haven't been home since about 3:30 this afternoon, so no chance to check things out today.

Thanks. I may get to bottom of this after all.
