Almost lost power

I averted another Friday night incident today. I was in the backyard, and I noticed one of the three wires coming to my breaker box from the power pole in the backyard was broken. I called the PG&E emergency number, and they arrived in about 30 minutes. It turns out the wire wasn't broke, but burnt, and one of the hot wires was also burnt, and close to breaking. Additionally, the two hots were supporting the weight of the run from the pole to the house, and it could have broken at anytime.

That would have been a terrible Friday night incident. I would be sitting here, drinking beer, listening to the stereo, and then total silence and darkness.

The wire that broke is your neutral, without which you should have been in the dark.
You're lucky. That electrician did a good job, either using a couple of ground rods, or a good water bond, or both (better still).

So, are you willing to put forth a little effort or are you happy sitting in your skeptical poo pile?

Yes. The PG&E guy kept saying, 'You have no neutral, my friend.' I assumed it was for strain relief of the other two wires.

Glad to hear you caught it and it was a quick fix. We are electric here and i have been tripping breakers in the man cave when it has been stupid cold. Nice today though! Got up to 50 in SW Ohio.

It was fixed right away. He just spliced the broken wire together, and replaced the splices on both hots. Probably took around 30 minutes. PG&E was very responsive. They have an image problem now that they are trying to change.

A few years they had a gas line explode that killed a few people and devastated a neighborhood. Now they jump for the slightest 'emergency'. In July my gas bill was as high as the previous January. I called them up and said I might have a gas leak since the bill was so high. They were there in no time, and found two leaks. One at the meter, and one with the dryer gas line.

My retirement house on Maryland's Eastern Shore is all electric, no gas lines in the area. I guess I should add solar to it, but will wait until I move there. No sense in giving the renters cheap electricity. :)

Yeah, solar is getting cheaper. We were close to getting a system installed but decided to hold off

Theoretically, it should get less expensive each year until it bottoms, or something better comes along. At some point though, it is nice not to have to pay for electricity each month.

Darn Fox, seems you can't catch a break on Fridays. Never seen an electric wire melt like that though to a house. I might be more concerned as to why that happened.
