Small footprint subs primarily for music?
Hey guys,
I'm considering a small 2.1 system for music. I have a set of LSi7's that I like, paired with an old vintage receiver. So far, the system has fairly good body, and sounds smooth and laid back, but I think I'd like to experiment with a small footprint subwoofer for some bottom end fill.
I've heard good things about the Sunfire True Subwoofer MKII (and I guess the MKIV is probably okay too), so I'm interested in trying out something like that or of similar design. for those who don't know, it's a smallish sealed sub, 11 inches cubed, with a 10" driver on one side, and 10" bass radiator on the other and a 2700W amplifier, weighing around 50lbs. Frequency response is supposed to be from 18Hz-100Hz.
Anyone have any experience with this sub, or have any experience or recommendations for something similar?

My brother has the LSI 7s and until he got a sub, what I noticed is that the speakers struggled a bit to play everything clearly. Once he got the sub, the 7s cleared right up since they didn't have to try to handle both the mid range and bass.Marantz AV-7705 PrePro, Classé 5 channel 200wpc Amp, Oppo 103 BluRay, Rotel RCD-1072 CDP, Sony XBR-49X800E TV, Polk S60 Main Speakers, Polk ES30 Center Channel, Polk S15 Surround Speakers SVS SB12-NSD x2

Thanks Cathy. Yeah, I find the 7's surprisingly capable for their size, but agreed, they do seem to fall off pretty quickly for the lower bass, and yes, I have found them muddying a bit at higher listening levels, so I'm definitely curious to see how this would all work with a nice little sub. got some good input over on a WTB post, so I have a few ideas of smaller subs to research. for anyone who happens across this thread they are:
- Mirage Omni 8 or 10
- Polk MicroPro
- SVS SB1000

I would definitely check out the REL line. They have quite a few smaller subs. second person to mention the REL line - the first was a current Sunfire MKII owner
I haven't really set a solid budget for this yet, but was initially thinking of trying to find something for $500 or less, and mostly expecting to go with a gently used, well cared for piece.
I should probably stick to my original thoughts on this, and keep it small footprint, $500 or less, and primarily for music. I may be able to allow for some cost creep if there's a particularly good option for a small musical sub that I'm not aware of. I don't have much experience with very many subs, so that's quite likely.I disabled signatures. -
I have a DSW MicroPro2000 and I love it. But I am not sure if it will have a home in my 2 channel rig once the 2.3TLs are done. But I also got such a great deal on it, I don't know if I will be able to part with it. Plus an 8 inch sub that rattles the plates in the cabinets downstairs..."Some people find it easier to be conceited rather than correct."

Then I'll be the third to mention the Rel line....or Revel. Though at a 500 buck budget, you may have to stick with the smaller Rels.HT SYSTEM-

what are you running your 2.3TL's with?
I just had an opportunity to try mine (stock, exc. tweeters) on an old Sansui QRX-7001. couldn't get over how well it ran them. I'd never heard those speakers like that before. usually have them running off a Halo C2 + HCA-2205A amp. the Sansui is only rated at 35wpc. they sounded way better than they should have. as I write, I'm half hesitant to post this, wondering whether I dreamt the whole experience. Then I'll be the third to mention the Rel line....or Revel. Definitive supercube , Paradigm Ultra Cube 10 or 12, Velodyne HGS 10 or 12, Earthquake supernova. You can also build one from parts express, on some of them all you have to do is install the driver and amp.
