What makes the music sound so wonderful? The amplifier or the preamp?

As nbrowser said, everything. But if you are just asking about the amp or preamp. IME, the preamp.--Gary--

I agree. I have a Denon POA2200 Amp i am very happy with. The Denon 1200 pre svcks. When i got it it seemed to be great until i got some time to listen to it. Pre plays a big part....I have hooked the cd direct to Amp & it sounds so good on the SDA1c's...

Don't forget your "ears"! They're what tells you how close what you're listening to sounds to the "original" and there are significant differences in what we all hear as is evidenced by the equipment we prefer.
Also, IMHO, if you really have a tin ear, it does not much matter what you listen to or how you listen to it. A good example is my son; in an experiment I had him listen to a cheap set of cans and a set of HD 600s with decent amplification, the differences, if in fact he could actually hear them, were negligible and unimportant to him! He also cannot carry a tune to save his life! I honestly don't know what "he" hears when he listens to music, probably nothing as edifying as what the OP hears! lol
His sister, on the other hand, can hear EVERYTHING and then some!
