The other receiver I was wanting isn't in the cards so this is my next choice... just wondering if it's still compatible with the sub...im a total noobie when it comes to this :)

    Sure it can, any 5.1 receiver will have a subwoofer output to connect a sub, that's what the .1 is in 5.1. Hope your not pushing too big of speakers with that receiver though, it's pretty light weight in the power area and no pre-outs to be able to add an amp if you need to down the road.
