Monitor 10 tweets
I have a pair of monitor 10s. Series B i believe (the frowning tweet with silk dome and hole in the middle). I hooked them up to my pioneer receiver (vsx-d1s) and tried playing some metallica. I turned it up and the bass was nice and tight, the mids were great but the tweets were way too bright? Shrill? I turned the treble almost all the way down but still to high. Is this normal? Are the new tweets way softer/mellow sounding? Thanks

No, it's a good rock speaker with plenty of bass output, many think it's a bit out of balance with too much bass and I agree. Trying other CD's will help narrow this down, but I suspect the Metallica CD is mastered too hot. Let us know what you find.Political Correctness'.........defined

Those are Peerless tweeters, not really known as bright. At what volume level did you have it? What is your source?Political Correctness'.........defined

onkyo cd player. i turned it up enough to be loud but not ear splitting..

i was comparing them to my paradigm 9se towers. The bass on the paradigms was looser and the tweets softer (like the singer was behind the band). The polks sound like the singer is in front of the band singing at me

Ok, let me ask again a different way. Was it more than halfway on the volume level?
There are a number of reasons for your issue. The volume is too high causing the receiver to send a clipped signal, the CD is mastered too hot, the CDP is consumer grade, cheap cables, etc.Political Correctness'.........defined

i don't think i had it that loud (maybe 1/3 of the way up). The pioneer puts out about real 120 wpc. Isn't clipping from not enough power? I am wondering if placement might be an issue? I knowthey need to be raised, tilted and toed in but could that really make that much difference? Do these need a break in after not being played for a long time?

Ok, that rules out clipping, so let's look at other possibilites. Is the issue with only that one CD or all?
Placement and the room are always a concern, but that leads back to the question above.
I take it these are new to you speakers. The speakers are now 30 some years old and the caps are way past their prime. It could be they are so far out of tolerance that it is affecting the performance.

yes they are new to me. first time i played them last night. I did try other cds and types of music but i think i will need to do further testing. i did find them nice for vocals easy listening music (chris isaak, santana, etc). Maybe this is better speaker for lower listening volumes, not hard rocking bass heavy type?

You should be able to play them at room filling levels. F1 gave covered a lot of bases above: could be poor synergy between cables and upstream components, digititis from the cdp, crappy mastering on the cd. What speaker cables are you running? Some designs can cause the kind of problems you describe.
If it was me I'd look into rebuilding the Xover. New quality film caps and resistors would improve things greatly."Science is suppose to explain observations not dismiss them as impossible" - Norm on AA; 2.3TL's w/sonicaps/mills/jantzen inductors, Gimpod's boards, Lg Solen SDA inductors, RD-0198's, MW's dynamatted, Armaflex speaker gaskets, H-nuts, brass spikes, Cardas CCGR BP's, upgraded IC Cable, Black Hole Damping Sheet strips, interior of cabinets sealed with Loctite Power Grab, AI-1 interface with 1000VA A-L transformer
