Extra Bass in Yamaha Speak, is letting your front left and right speakers receive the full range signal, while still sending low bass signals to your sub. It can add or detract from the bass depending on your room and equipment. Pioneer calls it Sub-Plus
Not sure what buckling is, but bottoming out usually means a woofer has reached it's maximum excursion limits and then some. The Voice Coil/Former literally hit or bottom out against the back plate of the magnet assembly.Home Theater/2 Channel:

westmassguy that doesn't sound too healthy. Based on what you told me I can venture a guess as to what "buckling" is and that sounds even less healthy.

No it's not healthy, although some Pro Woofers, and Some High-End Car Subs are designed to withstand it for a short period. If a conventional woofer repeatedly bottoms out, the voice coil former, if aluminum, will peen over, or become flattened on the bottom. Capstan formers will shatter, and early woofers with treated paper formers just collapse. I've had to give quite a few customers the bad news, when they insisted on operating their speakers with rotted foam surrounds or beyond their power rating. Time for a re-cone or replacement woofer.Home Theater/2 Channel:

Yes they do Tony. There are some really dumb a** people out there. They notice the bass has dropped off somewhat, or even hear a rubbing or chaffing noise. Do they check the speaker? No, they increase the bass on their amp or receiver, which exacerbates the problem, and the woofer self-destructs. In some cases however, the grills are stapled in place, so there's no way for them to check. By the time they realize the surrounds are gone, the damage is already done.westmassguy wrote: », when they insisted on operating their speakers with rotted foam surrounds .

Cool man, understandable. Best practice to avoid problems though comes from careful listening and that volume dial.
