Allergic to Garlic...so have a question on Chili Powder

Can I substitute Chipotle Powder for Chili Powder or does someone know of a substitute I can use for garlic to make my own chili powder? Have Googled this to some length with out an answer.

Get the real deal of chile powder from Hatch, New Mexico:
    www.hatch-chile.com

You can get different hotness, too.

The ingredients on the red chile package I have says:
Hatch pure red chile powder, flour, sugar, salt, and 'spices'.

So you could ask them if that means any garlic.

Man, allergic to garlic....I would die if that was me.

Don't know the answer to your question but like already said, be weary of anything labeled "spices".

On a serious note, I have a friend who is allergic to Garlic so we have an assortment of spice blends from these guys: http://www.thespicehouse.com/spices-by-list/garlic-free-blends for when her and her husband come over for dinner.
I have made venison chili using this garlic free chili mix: http://garlicfreeeasily.blogspot.com/2011/11/pantry-staple-chili-powder.html

My wife uses this one for her "coney" sauce... http://recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-detail.asp?recipe=1039325

    Hope these help.

Oh, Listen here mister. We got no way of understandin' this world. But we got as much sense of this bird flyin in the sky. Now there is a lot that bird don't know, but it don't change the fact that the world is happening to him all the same. A Italian allergic to garlic couldn't happen...now being born addicted to garlic I could understand...was thinking it must be tough being a Italian named Tony in Chicago ....cause every time someone in a public place yells "Yo Tony" 10 guys turn around :)
I heard that somewhere, remember the Starkiss tuna tell em Charlie sent ya, I went into the store and told the manager "Yo Charlie Sent me" he gave me 200 dollars.

you can check with them to be sure, but I don't believe this has anything but ancho chilies, and it is delicious. I haven't used any mainstream chili powder for quite some time. and Penzeys also has a delicious chipotle powder.

The coney sauce one sounds interesting but doesn't list the amount used of each herb...so...??

Its a recipe with a number of spices that you mix together. Kinda tough to mix them up when you don't know of much of each spice to use

Gotcha...that would present a problem then. lol Do it like the old Italians....little of this, little of that. They were notorious for never writing down exact amounts.

    1 part of each.
    You can do 1tsp, 1 tbsp, 1 cup, 1lb...
Sorry...it isn't very clear but it is a 1:1 ratio of all ingredients.

Heck yeah! Not being able to eat garlic? Are you kidding! Where would the "taste" come from?

Plus I thought the only "Nightwalker" around here was Jesse and I'm pretty sure even he is NOT allergic to garlic! lol

Not to make light of your affliction, but honestly, I've NEVER encountered anyone allergic to garlic. Of course there are "waspy" types who are afraid of what their "breath" will smell like afterward and feel social embarrassment and thus avoid garlic like the plague. The cure, just hang around some of us "garlic" eaters, there are enough of us!

That has to be a horrible thing to be allergic to.

I heard if you eat roasted garlic before you go to bed you sleep better....you will sleep alone but you will sleep better.

I contacted hatch-chile.com - they have a selection called 'pure chile powder' - and they confirmed that is all that's in it.

And - it's the real deal from New Mexico.

Well then, might have to try some out..thanks erik!

Yes, its been a real drag as...

    1. Miracle Whip has garlic, I grew up on Miracle Whip :sigh:
    2. SOME mustards have it, SOME pickles do, SOME relishes do...Can't be ordering stuff in restaurants and asking what brands do they use :(
    3. Most frozen foods do...heck, was looking at the Dino shaped chicken nuggets for kids and even THOSE

Well said my neighbor, the resident Greek. LOL Hope he's not allergic to olive oil too, god forbid.

Sorry Starkiller, we don't mean to make light of your allergies, though you have to admit, your a rare case and the first I've ever heard of myself. Good luck on your search for a substitute, I'm sure other cultures have a similar spice that I'm not aware of.

Dried shallots, or maybe dried onions might be a reasonable substitute.
Some Indians don't use garlic/onions/leeks for religious reasons and
sometimes use hing (asafoetida) instead. Not sure if everyone would
like that in chili powder, but I would as I love the flavour.
