Is this an overkill ?

Hi forum , my buddy is selling me a Rotel RB-980 bx amp for a cheap price $65 ....I research the specs on the amp it looks like a well made amp , I'm just interested in buying the amp for my center channel but the Rotel bridged puts out 360w and my Polk cs 350 handles 250w is this an overkill just for movie application ? Thanks guys

sounds like a perfect fit to me, but I would not bridge the amp into the 350 when one channel should be sufficient

I agree with John. I think most here would agree that in most cases bridging an amp doesn't give quite as good of sound quality as simply driving off of one channel. I'd try it driving the 350 from one amp channel's output first and if it works for your needs, you're set. If not, try it in bridged mode for more power.

Also, if you can drive it with just one channel's output and at a later date that channel goes out for some reason, you have one more channel to use before the amp must be repaired.

In my HT, I drive my center channel speaker which is a Polk CS 400 using one channel off of a Soundcraftsmen A2502 power amp. The amp puts out about 125 watts rms per channel at 8 ohms and it's never let me down.

That amp doesn't sound very good in stereo and is worse bridged.

  • Thanks guy for the output ...In that case I have a adcom 545 II laying around with a 100wpc into 8ohm I just didn't know if just using one channel at stereo would be safe to do so...on another note he gave me a monster hts 3500 mkII but I'm going to post this as another new discussion inputs are appreciated thanks again

Those adcom 545ii amps have a solid 100 wpc @8 ohms, using one of the channels should work fine for HT. Agree with F1, you don't want to run an amp in bridge mode.
