I have this receiver now, working as 5.1. Rear speakers are wired as SURR Speakers, changing to 7.1 in the near future.

So in the future do I wire the Rear speakers to Surr Back/Zone 2 speakers, and my new side speakers to the old rear speaker outputs ? This is the output I don't use right now.

If your onk does not have seven separate main channels use a seperate amp to power the surround backs. Use your pre-outs on your receiver to the amp and then wire the speakers from that amp.

I used to run my Onk this way and it works perfectly well. If you were to use the zone2 I believe you would be replicating your front channel info, but I have never tried it. Zone 2 is really for another area of the house.

This Onkyo model does this 7.1 / 5.1, or 5.1 with powered Zone 2. So it has 7 amp outputs on this model.

The Onkyo TX-DS898 is like the new TX-NR901 model now.

    Disneyjoe...

Yes, that is correct. In the 5.1 / Zone 2 configuration the rear channel information actually goes to the side surround terminals and your zone 2 runs off of what would normally be the rear channels. When you put the receiver into 7.1 mode the side terminals and rear terminals revert to the standard configuration. So, you will have to move your rear connections to the rear terminals (where your zone 2 is hooked up now) and your side connections to the side terminals. (where your rears where connected in 5.1 / zone 2 mode.)

Also, don't forget to go into the "Hardware Setup" and turn and turn the "Surr Back / Zone 2" off.
A lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part...
