Anyone deer hunting?

Just wanted to see if any Polkies are out in the field deer hunting. If so how's the season going. Mine is coming to an end soon, afterward it will be planning a 3.5 acre food plot for next season. So far I bagged two nice size doe, not seeing much buck activity lately. I have a Savage 110 with Bushnell Elite glass in 30-06 and it drops them on the spot. I'm picking up a Savage 300 Win Mag with Vortex Viper glass for Christmas to use next season.

Well post up your thoughts, hits and misses. It's all good sport.
Shoot the jumper.....................BALLIN.............!!!!!

Don't hunt 'em, but I love eating 'em. Can probably kill a few by throwing a rock at them in my yard though.

Love to shoot, just not into killing anything anymore...but my friends know they are welcome to bring by venison any time! Nice 6 pointer running around here, he made it through rifle season and very few black powder guys these days so he may just make it another year.

Went up to Minnesota in November for the annual deer hunt we have a nice shack on a lake 30 miles off the beaten path didn't do to we'll yet his year party of 8 only got three but split up venison. One the less had a lot of Timberwolves to contend with that snow storm and they were logging the area.

I m hunting second season in Iowa till the 21st we have a blind I. A wooded area between two cornfields and the backside of a lake. We have seen this 8 pointer on several occasions within a 100 yards of the blind can't seem to get him close enough matter of fact waiting for my grandson to get out of school and this evening and the next two days we are gonna try and get him. I use a Remington 30 of 06 and a New England Firearm 12 Guage with sabots. Glad to hear you did good.

I haven't in several years but I think next year I will try again. Might want to try bow hunting also.

Last week a friend gave me some steaks only a few days after he got the deer. I ate them the next day and it was delicious. Very tender, seasoned only with salt and pepper. My kids thought it was very close to beef steak and loved it too.

Careful with that 300 Win mag. Can blow big holes, ruining lots of meat if hit in wrong spot. I have a friend who can't seem to get the notion of leading a deer and has ruined a lot of hams, no fun when it comes to butchering that. Now, he's going back to a 30-06. I went from a .270 which is great for long field shots to a Browning BAR 30-06 semi, real nice.

Nope....Moose aren't exactly native to my area, but I'd give it a swing. Ostrich is also excellent.

Can't say I have had that. Is that like chicken? I'm all game on different meats. I know I don't like bear or wild turkey. To oily & too tough on the bird. Moose is better than top shelf meat at the store by far. I don't mind deer if its cooked properly & not been hung on a tree rotting for day

Bow hunting isn't far from that to be honest. 20 yards instead of 200 can make things a bit more difficult :)

Just got back in waited for my 11 year old grandson but he decided not to go something about a girl my little buddy has it for a 7th grader he is only in 6th so I go out in the woods set up his blind early Christmas present hang out his dripper other early Christmas present put an orange jacket over the blind put out a few more stinkys felt pads with doe eusterus and set it up chairs pops snacks field and stream mags, for him the latest Audio Advisor for me, an hour before night fall everything is ready.

I set down blast my deer grunt a couple of times after all the rukus and noise I made it was not a half hour later a doe came right down the deer trail in front of the blind I think blast it and not get the buck we have seen the last couple of pheasant hunts and last week's deer hunt, I had her in my sights and decided since the grandson was not with and I want the rack I let her walk
If he would of been with I would of let him shoot her as it is his first year deer hunting. She was lucky we need the meat but when I got home the little guy was here as he's spending the night 5:30 wake up call he asks so did you get everything ready I said buddy had you been with you would of bagged your first deer a doe I hope your after school date was worth it. Cool thread I will have to post some pics of our blind and area tommorow night when we get back in, that buck better be on his toes tomorrow. Actually it's his second year hunting in Iowa but was his first year hunting at the shack in Minnesota we told him and his cousion his first year to up there guys what happens at deer camp stays at deer camp good times.

Totally agree - moose is a delicious meat - though I think bear is a "what they've eaten" dependent product, I got one last year that's been great really.

I've been fortunate to be on sabbatical the last 30 days, got in some elk hunting in MT and whitetails in VA and IL - bagged a nice deer in IL (by VA standards, not IL) - the deer there are massive!

Looking forward to a few more days, then it's on to the duck blind/snow goose fields. Nice to see some folks on PF who enjoy venison.

Pic of my backcountry elk camp - about 6800 ft in the Bitteroot Mountains.

Ostrich...if cooked right is like a super lean prime rib steak. Buffalo and Venison make some darn fine chili too.

If I could, I'd eat wild anything. If your familiar with the way food is raised today for general consumption, you'll know what I mean.

Turkey....wild, I dig it. Don't think I ever had a bad bird and actually had more dissatisfaction with some store bought birds. Geese....keep 'em, way too tough and greasy. Duck....yeah, love 'em.

I may second your notion on the hanging Deer, but first....are you familiar with how prime steak is aged ? Maybe I shouldn't tell ya if you love a good aged steak. lol

lol...yeah man, but it does taste extremely good. Wrap it around a quarter sized chunk of mozzarella and throw it on the grill for a minute or so. You won't stop eating it.

    Boston,
Very similar to my own yard....and I too feed the critters especially in winter. You know your a bit over the top when you start naming them.

I ran out of corn in my deer feeder in the back pasture. We'd have about 4 of them every day for a while. When I ran out, of course they stopped coming and it was right about the time when our baby was born, so I didn't have time to refill it. Now that I have, I haven't seen them since. I guess I need to make sure it's still working. They might be coming before the sun comes up and I just don't see 'em. I'll have to adjust the timer if that's the case.

Haven't been deer hunting in years. Not sure if I'll ever hunt on my place. Only 20 acres and I'd rather see them than shoot them.

They will be back. As long as you feed them they will. Our neighbor in Augusta did for years. He used grain. He went to Florida one winter & the next winter they were back. He has spotlights on his eaves & he would take grain in 2 pans out. Spread them out & bang the pans together & the deer would come. In the daytime i could look out my back patio doors & see deer single file head to his house. I had 45 acres i would put a military jacket on & sit on a 5gal bucket at 4:30am & they would walk past me 10yards or so away. Cool as heck

  • Deer season found me in the extreme SE corner of Idaho chasing mulies near the metropolis of Montpelier, Idaho. I live 10 feet above sea level so starting at 7000 feet and going up took some getting used to!! The highest I made it was 9216 according to the altimeter. Saw plenty of bucks and moose and elk but nothing that I wanted. I mainly just take my rifle for walks in the woods at this point. The country was beautiful and the weather was great everyday of the hunt so no complaints.
I then went to MN and worked on the cabin and froze to death, again. I am really rethinking the MN thing at this point.
Back in Kotzebue the caribou season is on. Wait a minute, the season never closes here and the limit is 5 a day. If you want or need that many anyways. I was raised on Moose so Caribou are safe from me.

Put an arrow in a very nice 2 yr. old doe. It's being processed right now. My processor makes some really nice smoked venison that is then sliced real thin. Good stuff.

  • Last time I went out was when a buddy won 2 elk tags about 25 years ago. And I didn't have a real hunting rifle, so I run what I brung. A 308 H&K 91 with a variable Nikon scope. I didn't even shoot at one. And since my buddy paid for both tags I was only going to take a shot if he had already downed a big buck.
He got one but after that we never saw another unless it was way across the canyon(s).
But we got close to 500 pounds of meat off him. And did it ever taste great.
