Dolby Pro Logic, Not So Bad...

When purchasing my NAD 917 preamp, the fact it was Pro Logic only, left me skeptical on its movie performance.

Dare I say, Pro Logic is not holding my movie experience back.

Infact, this is the loudest, deepest bass, the most surround action, with the best blend I have heard YET from my system.

It must just be the processing of the NAD, but this IS the best movies has sounded for me yet. The room shakes when bass is supposed to be there, the surround channels are loud, thunderous (in a way good sense), the center is crisp and clean and blends well with the front channels.

This is the best movie experience I've had with my system. Pro Logic or not.

The point of this post is to let people realize that older preamps, even though out-dated can still sound fantastic.

BTW - Cold Creek Manor is an awesome movie.
- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit.

Absolutely! I have a B&K AVP4000 being pushed by a AV5000 and hooked up to RT16's all around with a CS350 center and I love to watch movies with it. For that matter I love music out of it too. But the movie experience is as good or better than many 5.1 systems I have heard and I am in no particular hurry to "upgrade". :)

    Disagree.

IMO PL sounds like absolute crap. WAY too much information through the center speaker, and the surround field is very directional, not enveloping at all. DPL2 on the other hand is a fantastic improvement and sounds excellent, especially for TV shows. I haven't made up my mind about dts neo:6 or H/K's Logic 7 yet..

Actually I prefer Dolby Pro Logic II over the older version, but that's just me. I do use Neo 6 on occasion, it does seem to fill out the audio space in ways that DPL dosen't, but of course I believe that this is all very subjective and not necassariyl written in stone.

    Well you have to remember.

My Pioneer Elite had DPL II, and I watched movies regularly...

The bass wasnt as good, the surrounds werent very active...

I plug up this NAD, with only being capable to play DPL...

The bass is thunderous in all bass scenes, unless the sub can't play it. The surrounds are active, best it has sounded...so far.

I really like this NAD, for music and movies.

eh, I was going to post an argument but I dont really feel like it.

DPLII is way better than DPL. If you don't believe me just ask Dolby, they will tell you.

    [strike]
First of all, are you saying that you actually prefer DPL to DPLII?

second, wouldnt it be more fair to compare a NAD DPL decoder to a NAD DPLII decoder?

There are so many things wrong with your simple switching thing:

first, were you powering the surrounds with the same amp?

was the placement of speakers the same?

was the system with the pe calibrated properly? is it now with the NAD?
    [/strike]

EDIT: btw they really need more powerful HTML compiling on this forum.

I was powering the surrounds with the same amp, calibrated on both systems...

    I can't afford a NAD DPL II preamp! ;)

The NAD unit vs the PE unit, older processing, better sounding!

Now, if you dont mind loaning me a DPL II unit by NAD...

I was even using a Coaxial cable before with the PE...

I'm just using standard patch cables now....and want to watch more movies. I will do just that!
