CD player

I have an old Carver CD player. Model 100 actually. I just put new belts on it and it seems to be done. Reads disk with a cd in it. Research says its the optical system not reading or out of alignment. So I was looking around for an after Christmas gift for my self. Came across this one. Yamaha BD-A1020 Seems like a decent unit and does all I would want one to do. Any thoughts on fixing the carver vs that one? My guess is the shipping and repair cost IF I could find a place to do it would be more or about half that player. So I'd rather just get that player. Anyone want a Carver for parts?

The way I look at it, as good as the Carver was, for its day, the Yamaha BD-A1020 offers all of that and so much more. Simply from a music standpoint, you gain the ability to add SACDs, DVD-As, HDCDs...and that is without going into what you can gain from streaming and video options.

Plus the price on the Yamaha is pretty decent (granted, even though I am a Yamaha fanboy, I would spend a little bit more on an Oppo BDP-103).

  • I might be interested in the carver.

Never heard of oppo? That's hard to believe. They are kings of the bdp world right now.

Still maybe so but I had not seen that name till today. That stuff was way out my budget right now too. Of course I don't look at much else other then here, my jeep forums eBay, and facebook.

The Oppo 103 is the same price as the Yamaha and gets better reviews. For $100 more you can get the Darby edition, which is supposed to enhance video to a higher level.

And with the Oppo (not sure of the Yammy), you get the option to use it as a streamer, so you can throw all that lovely music on a server and never have to get out of your seat to change the album.

Yea that Yammy streams. Well it has the capability to do Netflix and other online stuff. If that is what you mean. I'll look at that unit then too. I've been very happy with the PS 3 till now.

Just about any BDP nowadays will stream netflix, etc. Most don't allow you to access server-based media though.

Actually, a lot are DLNA enabled but just have very annoying and very basic interfaces.
My Sony BDP-S590 comes to mind. Great for what it is but sucks for what it tries to be. And not having a control app or a decent UI on the device itself makes for an inconvenient method of playing media from a local server.

This is where devices like the Oppo shine (and are getting better almost weekly).

I have the BD-A1010 and I'm pretty happy with it. Seems well built and all. I've never tried it as a stand alone CDP as, IMHO, a stand alone CDP should be that, a stand alone player. I'm not sure of the differences between this and the 1020 but the HDCD capability is a nice plus, if you have HDCD's...
