How good are the SDA-2B Studios

  • Like skip said; reflections, reflection angles, etc. many using SDA's don't have the room they need and still do well. Just be aware that they can do a LOT better when positioned properly.

Also like F1nut said; I have found it is best not to pull the SDA's far into the room. a few inches off the wall either way can make a significant difference, but I have never found it better when more than a foot off the rear wall. Of course i have never tried significant distances from the rear wall, say more than 2-3 feet. I would be intersted to hear from anyone who has.

If I decide to keep these, and I wanted to get the best bang from 1 mod, what would you recommend?

Replace the tweeters if they are the original sl2000. Order RDO 194's from Polk. Tell them you are a member. Should be around $100 shipped for 2.

Nope, no changes needed unless you decide to TL them and use RDO-198s.

The 194's are a straight swap.

To "TL" the speakers, crossover modification is necessary which allows use of the RD0-198.

Plenty of happy people who've substituted the 194's into models that came with the SL-2000. I suspect you'd be pleased with them.

So if I replace with the 194s, what would they be worth if I don't like them and decide to sell them?

Probably 80% of new price if sold very soon after purchase. Most here know what Polk sells them for new and if you give a little discount, then those looking for a pair would likely go ahead and buy. I don't think you will prefer the 2000's to the 194's.

Listen to them--decide if they are going to be around for a bit--then they would be worth adding the upgraded tweeters. Otherwise your probably going to take a loss (if you sell them a week later) depending what you paid for them//because new tweets are 105.00. Your probably not going to get top dollar for stock studio's with RDO tweets. But i guess you never know to the right buyer
....EDIT.... Post some pictures that may help us. Did you get the cord ? That may factor on a sale.

That's just it, I don't quite care for them as is but don't know if I want to risk sinking another $100 in to them and still not like them. I did get a cord for them, custom built, not stock. I will try to post some pictures later today.

If you have not decided to keep them and the trade is not final why not give them back the same way you got them. I bet the original owner would like them back with 194s, so don't swap tweets unless you are planing on keeping them.

SDA's arent for everyone. I have a set of 2b's im not using & my son in law wants them. Im trying to steer him away because=1st off He has my old HK 50wpc & rti8's i gave him 4 years ago & doesnt have the power to push them. 2nd'ly He is into Cerwin Vega kinda loud crank it up n beat the speaker up & SDA's deserve respect IMO. 3rd'ly He thinks these will be free too & thats not going to happen this time.

Voltz, I've owned all three of these. Put your money into modding the CRS+'s to perfection and you will be thrilled with them. I started with CRS+'s, then went to 2B's, then to 1C's, then back to CRS+'s again. Stick with them and do them up right.
Good music, a good source, and good power can make SDA's sing. Tubes make them dance.
