PLASMA TV being phased out?

I have a older generation rearproj LCD 60" TV for a about 12yr old now so I am considering to buying a Plasma as they are cost effective than their LED counterparts. My dilemma is that my TV is still 100% functional and If I invest on a new lamp it will be good as new and brighter than it's projecting now. Or should I just replace it now with the Plasma TV or wait 'till my TV dies? I am worried that Plasma will be obsolete in the near future and I have no choice to be on the LED bandwagon. Pls advise...thanks

Plasmas are long gone. Pioneer is dead, Panasonics are gone and Samsung quit 6 months ago.

If you like the plasma, I suggest looking at the LG 4K LED's. Shoot me a pm with your number an I will give you a buzz. I work for a TV store and will help you out any way I can.

Get the Samsung 60" 5300B plasma. On sale now and the best set you can buy for the money. I think they go for $699 now. Get the extended warranty because, well it is a Samsung.

That's the question, not sure if it's being phased out or not.

So you compared it to a 4k plasma then ? Not aware of one that exists. Comparing a 4k set to a 1080p set isn't relative to the technology used.

Personally I like Plasma for the obvious reasons. No motion blur and off axis watching and the color seems to be just right. However I do dig the 4k sets, just not enough material to watch in 4k yet....so I'll wait. Which will probably be a long time too as regular broadcast TV hasn't even caught up to 1080p yet and in some cases, 1080i.

There seems to be a huge disconnect between technology advancements in video, bandwidth available, and stations willing to broadcast in 4k. The only thing I can come up with is everyone is still trying to figure out how to charge you more for 4k viewing. Either way, nobody seems to be on the same page.

Yup, the big draw for 4k will be movies rather than TV shows. Though I have no problem with my 60" Plasma honestly. At a 4k resolution I almost would want a PJ and a 100" screen min. For me my 1080p Plasma will stay for a long time.

Isn't it gaming driving the 4K more than movies right now?

Maybe....but a better gauge of a 4k set is to ask them to play a 1080 signal on it at the store, which is the majority of what you'll be viewing anyway. You may find some surprising results.

I did just that on a Sammy 4k 55 incher. Picture was less than stellar to put it mildly. Maybe there was some other adjustment that needed to have been made, but just switching signals....wasn't so hot.

Depends on what you mean obsolete, Plasmas for the price still has/had the best black color period. Then through in viewing angle and no blur. OLED may have come the close the color but have not read much about the blur.

Oled is still way over priced.

When manufacturer stop making something, it becomes obsolete. Plasma is on it's last legs....but I still prefer the picture quality of Plasma over LCD or LED.

Sony's 4k xbr900 was about the closest to my Kuro, even better in some aspects, that I've seen so far. One thing to look out for in the cheaper 4k sets is they still have that motion blur for sports. TV makers spout the 120,240hz refresh rates but that's not the cause. It's in the TV's processor, a good one equates to no motion blur. I was disappointed to see motion blur in a Samsung 4k 55 in. set the other day.

  • I absolutely hate the 120-240hz tv's. I had a 60" sharp for one day and it made me feel seasick watching it. Movies all had a home video feel because of it. I have seen the same effect on just about every LCD/Led tv with that technology.
