So the Onk701 has THX decoding now my questions is does my DVD player have to also have to be THX "Certified" to get this playback or does the AVR decode it all?

What's THX decoding?
THX is a set of standards for gear, not an encoded format as DPL / DD / DTS is. It a nutshell, it's Lucasfilm's good-housekeeping seal of approval.

As Russ said, THX certified logo on a piece of equipment means it met their standards. My ONK also has a DSP for THX-Cinema, I believe this may be what you are referring to. If I remember correctly the manual said something about sound re-equalization or something along those lines. So to answer your question if you use this setting the receiver will process the sound from the DVD player. I am thinking it took some of the brightness out of the soundtrack now that I think about it.

Good point reel. My Oink has the 'Re-eq' soundfield (dsp) option also, and as you said, nothing else is needed to use it.
From the little I read on it, it was supposed to scale down the soundfield for a smaller (home) viewing room, vs the original sound format for a typical public theater.

I stand corrected. I always thought its was like DTS and DD as some DVD movies have it and some dont. Like Star Wars and Monsters Inc have the THX on the back but others dont. ThanksLife without music would♭

guess this sums it up
THX - Lucasfilm Inc. has developed a certification process for audio and video components that meet their high standards for home theater performance. THX-certified components incorporate specific performance features and circuits designed to compliment and enhance other types of surround sound systems, like Dolby® ProLogic and Dolby® Digital.Life without music would♭
