Replacement remote for Vector Research VCD-900

This is a longshot question:
I have an old Vector Research VCD-900 CD player. It was TOTL for VR in the late 80's, supposedly made by Kyocera. Built heavy and sounds nice.
The remote that came with it lights up does not work.
I tried to program a cheapie RCA "universal" remote with codes I found in the RCA manual and on the internet with no luck.
I like this player, but I have to get up off of the couch to skip tracks (yes life IS hard for me).
Any suggestions of different codes to try, or a different universal remote that might work?
Thanks,
Tim
