Santana's 1st lp

I am looking to get Santana - Santana on vinyl and there are 2 versions out there = Mofi & Sundazed. The Sundazed seem to have better reviews but its not 180 gram vinyl. The mofi is 180 gram but has some bad reviews, so I'm not sure which to get.
- Anyway heard these and do you have any opinions on them?

  • can't say exactly as I got mine from the dollar vinyl section.
My Sundazed LP experiences haven't been that good.

some of my new Sundazed have some noise in them, especially the color vinyl that I avoid all colored vinyl now. maybe it had nothing to do with that, but they all are just good and not the best.

    thanks gce!

I had a feeling you might have one or the other, your avatar pic tell me you just might be a Santana fan :) I think the bad reviews felt that mofi had toned it down on the newer pressings, think I'm going with the Mofi copy.

I also have Abraxas on MFSL and to me it sounds better but I still have no complaints on the first one. Let me know what you think when you give it a listen.

I can't compare the two either but I have the first three on MOFI and I love them. Have many LP's on colored vinyl and I'm not a fan. Try to stay away from it.
If you'd like regular copies of the first 3 albums send me a PM.

pumpkinman, I see that III is on the Silver Label. How does it compare to the other 2 on Gain 2?

Yes III was released only recently on the MOFI label. I personally can't tell any diff.
but at my age my hearing is suspect. Looks like I may have been mistaken on Abraxas as I haven't located it yet. I have sooooo many LP's it is hard to keep track and I don't always return an albu to proper slot when I'm finished.

I'm starting to have the same problem. I've started to pull the one next to the one I'm playing out a little so I know where to put it back.

Thanks for the info on the Silver Label, I think I'll be getting that one next.

I look at record cleaning as Therapeutic, but I wonder if P-man see's it as a nightmare? Do you always clean before you put it away so its already done?

I clean mine (even new) with "Spin-Clean". I don't have one of those expensive vacuum cleaning machines yet. After cleaning with Spin-Clean I use a Carbon Fiber Brush before putting them back in the sleeve, works great!

Therapeutic it is. I love the whole process. If I've never cleaned the LP it's done before I play it. When I'm done listening to it it is placed in a new MOFI inner sleeve before being put away. Then I use a carbon fiber brush before each play from then on. I picked up a almost new VPI 16.5 RCM about 6 years ago. Before that I used a DIY unit I made. Which was just a good as the VPI but not nearly as convenient.
Here's is the RCM I made for Deepak a forum member here at Polk.

    very cool P-man, nice work.
I use a VPI 16.5 also and I also clean everything I just bought wither new or used. New I used a 2 step process, but older ones get a 3 step with the 1st step in enzyme cleaner. I then put it into a mofi inner sleeve also and toss out the one it had unless it has lyrics or such then I save those but store them in another box. then I always use a anit-static brush on them before I play then and I use a stylus cleaner solution by "LAST" and this Onzow Zerodust stlus cleaner!frm90f13s8k6.jpg
