Funny "YES" Karma story

Preface: I'm not very familiar with Yes which is really a big reason why I entered the Karma.

I'm grilling burgers tonight and decide to pop in one of the Yes CD's I won from p-man. As I'm grilling and preparing the meal, the music is pretty much just background music. Once the burgers were done and I sat down to eat, I start actually listening to the music and think, "I never realized that Yes sounded so much like Led Zeppelin." After continuing to listen I decided that there was no way Yes sounded so similar to Led Zep. At this point I realized that my 5 disc changer had moved ahead to the next disc: Jimmy Page with the Black Crowes. doh!

I thought you were going to play em on that new Oppo 105 of yours? I love that Page, Crowes live at the Greek. Put those Yes CDs in the Oppo get some headphones out and plug them into it and be prepared for some of the best Progressive music ever recorded.

  • Well, there are about six variations of Yes over the years so you might find one that you like. You can dig up XYZ as well. That was a Jimmy Page Chris Squire project that didn't get off the ground (sadly)

I was thinking you are crazy for thinking YES sounds like Zeppelin (before you got to the end of the story). :D

If you haven't heard YES much, you need to experience them. YES, IMO is absoultely NOT background music. It requires your full attention to appreciate it. If you do not give YES's music your full attention, you more than likely will not appreciate it.

Let us know what you think after listening.

Taken from a recent Audioholics reply regarding "Club Polk" and Polk speakers:
"I'm yet to hear a Polk speaker that merits more than a sentence and 60 seconds discussion." :\
My response is: If you need 60 seconds to respond in one sentence, you probably should't be evaluating Polk speakers.....

That's happening in about 5 minutes...no headphones though. And don't even recommend it because I can't afford another rabbit hole.

Yeah, I thought I was crazy too. I'm familiar with the popular Yes stuff, "Roundabout", "I've Seen All Good People," etc. Nothing like Led Zeppelin. I was wondering how they could sound so different and how I could have possibly gone all these years not knowing they have stuff that sounds similar to Zep.

Can I place a little blame on the Crystal Skull I was drinking while grilling the burgers???? :D

My favorite Yes lineup was Squire/Tony Kaye/Bill Bruford (definitely him!), followed by Squire/Wakeman/Bruford. Lost interest when Bruford left the band as I thought Alan White's drumming was too straightforward. BB really drove that band.

After a few nights of listening on my main setup I've decided I like it. I'm all over the map on music so I don't know how I've managed to get this far in life without ever owning a Yes album. Thanks again to the p-man for broadening my musical horizons.

  • Thanks for sharing a great story. Inspired me to pull out my Fragile SACD and give it a spin. What great tunes to digest my "zinc phosphatng as a pretreatment for organic coatings" chemistry notes to chill about some work issues. A few beers may or may not have been injured in this evaluation.

I wore the Big Generator cassette I had literally to pieces in the late 80's. Love Will Find A Way still makes me think of the cute girl I "dated" the summer after my sophomore year in HS. Good times on the lake that summer!
