Anyone using Debut Carbon & Speed Box S

Hey guys,

I had a problem with hum like a lot of you, I grounded the speed box case to the same place I ground the TT and everything is quiet on the Northeastern front...

There is a lot of hocus pocus with this hobby and now I know why...its because things matter that shouldn't, logic seems to be thrown out the window from time to time....and this is one of those times, I had a hum...While turning things on and off i noticed that touching the speed box made it a little worse...i figured it was the TT and tried 3 or 4 different grounds...lengths, thickness, stranded, hard...etc...I was about to throw the whole thing out the window when someone suggested this in another forum...I thought it didn't make sense because the hum was there when the TT was off also...so I said "what the hell" and it worked...

something to look out for...

carry on...

    hey Bill

I have that same setup and have not had that happen to me as I never got a hum from the speed box being hooked up. Mine is exactly the same as yours, and I Never did have yours hooked up as I never took it out of the box. wish I had now as stuff like that drive me crazy figuring it out.

Thanks for the tip. I have the Debut III & SpeedBox S. Since I switched processors, I've got some hum that I didn't have before. I'll have to give grounding the SpeedBox a shot.

I never thought I had a hum issue with my Carbon, until recently. I am hearing a slight hum as soon as the needle touch s the record. I assume that this is picking up the motor hum, but I never heard it before. I did recently replace the tv stand that it was setting on, but I don't imagine that could exacerbate the hum issue. Any suggestions? Stock debut carbon with the pro-ject cork-it mat.

Luckily, I don't have the motor hum issue with my Debut III. I've been running the acryl-it platter for awhile. I think I had a slight hum with the steel platter, but it wasn't loud enough to be a bother & I'm not 100% positive it was the motor. My motor is suspended on the rubber band mount.

I heard that those carbon debuts are prone to have that Hum issue. Lots of threads about it all over the internet.

it could be something to do with you phono amp also, as I chased a few demons myself with my setup. thought it might be ground loop problem at one time etc.. changed phono amps and used a Acrylic platter and I'm not sure why it went away. or a bad ground wire or a lose wire can cause that too....so many little things to check.

Yeah, sure is. I did a quick google and learned that I need to be sure the the belt is tracking right in the middle of the pulley, not rubbing the upper or lower lip. Sure enough mine was rubbing the lower lip. I re-aligned it and now the hum is only apparent at very loud levels between tracks. Good enough for me. I didn't think I had this problem previously, but became apparent overtime. The belt must have worked itself down over the last 18 months to the point it made the hum more audible. I may try the other fixes I discovered to try and completely eliminate the hum, but at this point it is not really a problem again.
