New receiver recommendations needed

My SC-27 was fried by lighting and the repair cost is 2/3rds for what I originally paid for the unit. I like pios (have 2 old ones SX-880 & SX-1280) but since they are getting out of this, is it safe /wise to purchase another one. Thinking of the SC-68 or maybe jump into separates. Budget is no more than 3K.

Should there be any future maintenance concerns since they are being discontinued?

Get another SC, they are not being discontinued. Pioneer just announced a TOTL Elite universal.

Maintenance ? What maintenance do you need to do on a SS receiver ?

The receiver will outlast the changes in the industry. Your more prone to the receiver being outdated eventually by industry changes to software.

Ouch on the 27! Thats what I am running. If you don't need an upgrade, just grab another used 27 or something along that line.

SLK are you talking about the Sony ES 4k9.2ch? I took a look at the 7.2 4k es and it only shows 6ohm on the "rating" I hate when manufactures give out only a 6 ohm rating instead of 8 and 4.

Best $1100 dollars I've ever spent yeah I run the fronts with my Adcom but did run my fronts rears and surrounds off it alone to see how it did and I was surprised on how well it did alone!!! I've owned and still do own Denons and Yamahas and no comparison, this Onkyo trumps them. Sounds great in two channel mode and the phono stage is decent.

Yes, I still have an Onkyo TX NR series in my living room system and pretty problem free. Still kicking myself in the rear end letting the my other one go for next to nothing!! Live and learn!

I really like the Pioneers myself. I'm sure these power surge issues are fixable but there ALWAYS seem to be a catch. Great that Pioneer offers boards to the public but they are too expensive. OTHO, companies like ONKYO do not offer the boards to the public. In both cases repairs are costly. I would like to look at one of the Pioneers maybe at some point to see if a component repair is possible. I hear the ICE amp boards can be tricky.

I was surprised at how nice the upper Onkyo's sound vs. the midline and some other manufactures.

That is about all you can do short of unplugging everything. Insurance that will cover damaged is even better. Think about this.....I'm a tech/sales support tech for a solar inverter manufacture. I have a customer down in Florida who's solar inverter and monitoring was damaged due to lightning. His neighbor's luck was even worst. The solar system, tvs, computers, appliances, etc got fried. Both of these are large expensive homes and both spent thousands on hole house surge protection.

So, don't go crazy but try to get products with insurance from the surge protection manufactures, etc.

Not sure if I was clear but both homes had surge protection previous to the storm. The electronics still got damaged.

I live in Mobile, Alabama which runs a tight race with Seattle for the most yearly rainfall. But there's a difference. During the summer we can get a pop up thunderstorm that will drop 3" in less than an hour with serious lighting.

I unplug my gear during the summer period before leaving for work but this storm came in earlier October with the weather forecast calling for a heavy rain with no warning for severe lighting. So, I did not unplug this time. IMHO, if you live where lighting is intense, there's only one way to protect your gear and it's a pain - unplug your gear.
