Room size limitation

Hi All,

I just joined the community. I'm planning to set up a home cinema, my desired setup is like this -

1. Harman Kardon AVR 3700
2. Pair of Polk RTi A9 for the front
3. CSiA6 Center channel
4. pair of Fxi A4/6 Bipole Surround for the rear
5. DSW Micro Pro 1000 Subwoofer and

However, I think my room size may be too small for this configuration. My room is 3m X 6m x 2.4m (width x length x height). Please suggest me if this configuration works.

If the room size is small, I can consider downgrading my configuration too.

I've attached the layout of the room, I can't change the current layout. Looking forward for help and suggestions.

Thanks in advance,

You will need an amp to power those speakers properly. If you have a receiver with pre-outs you are good to go, if not you will need a receiver with pre-outs.

  • First thing I would do is move the window.
  • Thanks slk55amg, rednedtugent,

@slk55amg‌: I shall check if HK AVR 3700 is with pre-outs. I'm concerned that since the room's width is only 3 m, keeping these big floor standing speakers and also surround speakers at the rear might cause some imbalanced effects because of sound reflections. Please let me know if my concern is valid.

@rednedtigent: I can't move the window  However, the window doesn't have any projections like I've drawn in the layout. I guess this was the reason, you suggested to move the window?

How come you don't move the sectional out into the center....and move the TV toward the center of the long wall...that would free up your back wall for your speakers...can't do that?
  • @Msabot1, That's a distant possibility. but I have doubts about the width of the room, as its only 3 m and length of the room is 6 m. So, my current plan for the system has front and rear within a distance of say, 2.5 m (considering leaving space between the wall and the floor standing speakers). I believe, RTi A9 & Fxi A4/A6 may overpower the room.

The current choices I have, is to

    a. Downgrade the system to 2.1 or
    b. Downgrade the configuration of 5.1 to TSx 550, TSx 220 & TSX 250c

But, I've an incredible offer for RTi A9, which otherwise is way beyond my reach. That's why the dilemma.
  • attaque attaque, toujours attaque! >:)
    I would:
    get the RTi A9
move the sectional by the door
move the TV by the window
buy two PSW505 (you can get them as low as $169.00 new)
and I've always wanted f/x1000 used
pondering a center but I'm sure that would be o.k.
  • Thanks rednedtugent,

Moving the sectional by the door is impossible purely because of wifey factor, this room is the living room. I've Pair of RTi A9s and DSW Micro Pro 1000 Subwoofer on great offers. Just wanted to make an informed decision before buying them, the rest I can buy gradually I guess. PSW 505 is not available in my country(Spain) though it makes more sense to buy it. fx 1000s are too bulky for the room size I guess (apart from non-availability). Basically, i'm looking for the best configuration I can get hold of but at the same time I want it to be practical buy.

Harman Kardon too is not officially sold in my country and I need to source it from Amazon. Let's see how it goes.
  • Now it is coming out. :) Where in Spain? (I like to learn as to not be so ignorant)

Beautiful city...lots of history......Room size limitations would dictate a high current, high headroom reciever...won't need to go high with the volume control...go that route....and keep the speakers you have?
  • @Msabot1: Thanks, that helped. I shall update when I buy and start setting it up. Indeed, Valencia has lots of history and beautiful beaches, have you been here anytime?

Yes...when I was attached with the service in Rota.....I remember a festival close by where there is a huge tomato fight...got to travel extensively through the whole country...if space concerns are a problem....you might consider a good three channel amp also...
  • Nice to hear that, the festival is held in a place called Buñol, here's the wiki.

About 3 channel amp, I haven't really thought in that direction, I need to do some research. I hope if I go for 3 ch amp and in future buy an AVR, there won't be any problem in pairing them.
  • Your city looks fabulous! Wow factor! Congrats on the U.N. thing as well.
Maybe a nice powerful 5 channel but only use 3 and the sub then.
I've found a nice-well placed sub can cover up a lot of sins.

  • Well, newegg.com had a shell shocker sale and I couldn't say no.
What I've learned is that even though my PS10 center doesn't
match any of my speakers, the sub can bridge the gap in sound.
Still playing around tweeking it all. Two subs are the bomb!
  • @la2vegas, I'm curious, based on your experience, how do you see my configuration? Sorry if I'm overbearing, you said your room size is similar to mine, hence I need some reassurance before I "click" that button
