Number One Reason Stated for Selling SRS/1.2/1.2TL

I've read a hundred sales listings on Ebay or Craigslist, or other sites over the years, and I've discovered a common thread: The number one reason, by instance, that I have seen stated is some variation of "Only reason why I'm selling is wife hates them." (This taken directly from a listing for SDA SRSs in Pittsburgh Craigslist.) I think DK has even termed this the WAF(Wife Acceptance Factor.)

Now for me, my wife has a love/hate relationship with the SRSs and the 1.2TLs. She loves how they sound. She hates how much real estate they use, but perhaps more than the floor space, the vertical visual impression.

Why is this? My wife makes me suffer with her crazy cat, and several other things, and so I guess on that basis, she's willing to overlook the large speakers(which that dang cat won't leave alone,) but I have to say this, because every man has to draw his own lines: If the speakers have to go, I'm gone too. I gave up the SRSs once, twenty-seven years ago, for the sake of the things *we* needed.

Fortunately, I'm currently under no such demand, and I don't anticipate it, but I'm wondering what others think about all of this.

I've never heard the BIG BOYS of the group. Seen them, seen pics, specs., etc., but I do not have one room in a house that has ten rooms, a partially finished basement and 2.5 baths that is big enough for them. In fact my SDA 2Bs are currently in a closet because the only room that can accommodate them is the basement and I have other things happening in there, including the second HT rig, some old original Advents (nostalgia factor and they look nice with their wood cabs) on a Pio SX-3900, EPI 100V on an SX-838, and set of Boston A100s on a NAD C325bee and an HK HD-990 CDP-a very good sounding system for the money there, got the A100s for $60, the NAD used from Audiogon, and the HK on closeout. I'm surrounded! lol

1.2lts are prohibitively large and require a Great Room. Something a 114 year old house does NOT have! It goes without saying that my wife already thinks I'm nuts! But I come from a long line of gifted eccentrics-at least that's what others say?

    Enjoy!

I went from Def Tech BP 30's (floor standers with narrow baffle) to 2.3TL's. The thing that has me shocked is my wife really likes the look of the big SDA's. I count myself lucky - and in the minority!

  • Thanks Drumminman, you're indeed blessed.

I went through ebay this morning and asked the sellers of SRSs why they are selling, and so far, just one response:

"i want smaller speakers, in my new house my wife doesn't want them in the living room..."

I'll post the other replies, if similar.

    Rare indeed, Drumminman.

While I don't necessarily subscribe to the Happy wife, Happy life maxim, I know the opposite to be true, Unhappy wife, Unhappy life. They have a unique talent for sharing displeasure. That being said, my speaks are in "mantown" as we call it, the finished basement which is too cold for her liking, and therefore, I have free reign I am led to believe I have free reign.

  • One of the good things about SDAs and WAF is that they sound best when placed along a wall. This is usually not the case with other speakers that need toe-in and space to breath. I would hate to see these things 3-4 feet out from the wall and "toed-in" in the middle of my family room.

  • I love my wife and she has never complained about my SRS or even my 1.2Tls or any of the others that may take up as much sq footage but be somewhat shorter. She even help me with listening tests during my upgrades. i knew she was as good of a blind test as i could get, though not a trained listener, she does enjoy that I enjoy them.

That being said, my past experiences witrh ex's, friends wives, etc. indicate that women do not like us ment to have things that could be considered "compensation" for some kind of "syndrome". Be it speakers, engines, cars, grilles, or any other item we may desire to be big. They would like for us to to not compensate for things they like to keep in their purse.

  • Well, having read through your answers to my question, I don't doubt the plausibility of your answers, Drumminman being a particularly fortunate guy, but I have my own theory about this, having watched a friend sell off a pair of 2.3TLs some years ago, that I would have bought, had I the coin at the time. He wanted to wait long enough for me to save up, but his bride of eighteen whole months was adamant. So here's my theory:

I have my own theory(naturally) about why so many wives seem to dislike the SRS speakers particularly, and any large loudspeakers generally. I think it comes down to plain, old-fashioned jealousy, and all the rest about aesthetics is just a convenient bit of misdirection.

    Why?

Polkies, let's be consider these questions:
    • Which has aged better, generally?
    • Which still has the same great looks, potentially without any cosmetic touch-ups?
    • Which has failed you fewer times?
    • Which never, ever nags you?
    • Which is never harsh or shrill?
    • Which do you [more readily]wish to hear in stereo at high volume?
    • Which of them doesn't mind if you forget your anniversary or their date of birth/manufacture?
    • Which of them will never bring home a cat that will tear up the other?
    • Which of them can actually be improved with minor, inexpensive tweaks?
    • More than twenty-five years on, which do you prefer to hear after a long day's work?
    • Which is more soothing?
    • Which of them remains quiet when you ask it of them?
    • Which has the longer, more expensive "wishlist" of things for you to do[for/to them]?
    • Which can make noise without interrupting your train of thought?
    • Which of them would concern and disappoint you more upon falling inexplicably silent?
    • Tell the truth about which of these the following statement more fully applies: "If I had to have this relationship all over again, I would, happily and enthusiastically..."
    • Who would you prefer as your father-in-law? The one you have/had, or Matthew Polk?
    • Which is more likely to make you smile?
    • Which one would claim the other is handled more gently?
    • Which one will you never figure out its inner workings?
    • Which one knows the difference between sine and square waves?
    • Which would you cry over if they suddenly disappeared?

Thank goodness I have a dedicated building where my 1.2tl's can breathe and I can optimize the room just for them. I don't know how it would go over having them in the living room as I never even tried setting up a pair of monster speakers in there. I can see where some wives would get upset having a pair of SRS's completely dominating the living room as I'm not a fan of doing that either.
  • Motorstereo,

While I can see your point, I don't know if I like the idea of having to leave the premises to listen to my SRSs. At that point, part of me would just as soon keep going...

On the other hand, a good listening bunker might be a good idea. A back-up generator, a refrigerator stocked full of Erdinger Dunkelweizen, and maybe a side closet with a cot, I wouldn't need to go into my house except for hygiene purposes.

I'll have to think about that. We have forty acres, so I'm thinking I have a lot of space to build my bombproof listening bunker. Add a small bathroom and a septic system for one, and what do I need in my house anyway?

    Thanks!

Yeah, Motorstereo, all it takes is money. Besides, if I stick with my plan, I'll have my new home and my listening room in due course.

It seems like a lot of space, but the horses use most of it. The hay pasture uses most of the remainder. The home, the yard, and the barn altogether use about 1.5 acres. Maybe someday, but not 2015... LOL
