Dolby Atmos 5.1.x Speaker Setup and Suggestions

Hi Polk Community,

I have just started to build my HT setup, so to be future proof I thinking of going straight to 5.1.2 atmos. May be go to 5.1.4
I have dedicated 12w x 17l x 9h room.

Room would be mainly used for watching action movies.

I already have
Fronts: Polk RtiA9s
Amp/receiver: Emotiva XPA-2 and Onkyo 838.

Center = CSI A4 or A6 ??
WAS considering FxiA6 for rear surrounds, but as Fxi's are bipole/dipole, and i read that only direct speakers should be used with Atmos, which other speakers should use for

Rear Surrounds - I don't want too deep/obtrusive speakers - ??

Ceiling - Which would be better choice for atmos 70-Rt/90-Rt or 80F/X-RT ??

Any help is appreciated.

  • Csia6 definitely.
And probably the rtia3/a1 for rear if you want to stay in the same product line.
As for deep/obtrusive speakers, I am not sure
As I would think they would carry a heavier load versus the ceilings.
Good setup by the way. Excellent starting point.
    Good luck!!

That AVR is a good choice I got the same one , go with the A6 for your center. I Have the A3s for rears and surrounds. I would think the 70 or 90 RTs for the ceiling would do just fine.

I guess if you can go ceiling speakers that might be the desired approach.

However, I bet more will offer pods to site on top of your current speakers...like what KEF is offering here: http://www.kef.com/uploads/images/en/r/what_is_atmos.htm

Would like to hear Atmos...but even before that, I would like to see what front Height and Wide would actually sound like in my system. Need the room for it first.

I have a similar setup. I would definitely recommend the A6 over the A4. For ceiling speakers, I bought 4 of the 90RT but was having second thoughts on whether I should have bought the 80fx-RT. I haven't installed them yet so my opinion is not based on actual experience.

  • Thanks everyone for their inputs.
I got the A6 for center, so that blends in perfect.

ahmed: why do you think 80fx-rt may be better than 90rt. My main goal is dolby atmos. Also which ones you use for surrounds.?

I don't know for sure it will be better.. I read that top speakers are preferred to have wide dispersion to avoid localization and I assume the 80fx will have a wider dispersion than the 90-rt. The 90-RT is an overall more capable speaker but I wonder if the extra extension / output is really needed in this case.

    I use 4x RTI A5s for surrounds.
