Vintage Sansui

I had a day off on Friday so i did a quick CL search of garage sales for pioneer.
What came up was an estate sale close by with a bunch of stuff.
So I went. Odd deal, estate sale and the owner wasn't dead?
But I found a pioneer quad pre, quad adapter, real to real Sansui tuner, dual TT
and two Sansui AU-999 amps with wood cases. Plenty of other stuff, too.
I talked to the guy a bit. He wasn't giving in on price the 1st day, and someone
surely was going to show up and clean this stuff out. It was being run by one of
those estate sale guys, so they took visa, so I snagged one of the AU-999
integrateds. Yes. I caught Hades when I got home.
But it was worth it. It was very nice inside aqnd out. The guy must of kept it covered.
No dust, no rust, case had never been opened. And it looked brand new inside.
The front was pretty, and the wood case was very good as well.
No deoxit needed for this one.
It was warm sounding, but lacked detail. A quick trip to AK and a whole lot
of chatter was about preamp mods. This is the easiest to work on amp ever made.
Preamp boards slide right out. I changed 5 resistors on both boards and it sounds
great now. I swapped out the spring clips for recessed banana jacks for speaker a.
That's it. The Marantz 1150 and the kenwood kr-7600 are out of here.
This is the one I've been looking for.

I've been searching for a while for a classic Sansui.
They just aren't out there anymore. And if they are, $$$$$$$.
After modding, it sounds right up there with other popular Sansui
integratreds. The clean inside still blow my mind. This was somebody's baby.

They are tough to find, you are right about that. I had a relative who had a G 9000 who "as a kid" sold it to buy a car back in the day. We still talk about the old days playing albums with that thing and how much he wished he still owned it

I guess it's not that hard to find. Just hard to afford.
Classic Sansui stuff on ebay and CL are priced crazy high.
There have been AU-717's and 9090's listed on CL.
The 9090db was listed for $1100. He dropped the price
to $500 after he found out the tuner section was broke.
Some bargain. Anything not sky high is the rare part.
All of them are up on ebay and on local CL, so you have to
dance around while they wait to see where the best price comes
in from. This wasn't cheap. ($217 with tax-estate sale!!)
But you would never find another one like it under $500
    on fleabay.
Did I mention the JBL Paragon the neighbor bought before the sale started?

She's a beauty! Love the design on those; very classy.

I have an AU-517 that I "did" pay a bit more for, not the 717 everyone looks for but not that different either (lower power at 65 watts x 2). But it's been sitting under a desk in the basement for a year now since the Phono section needs some attention and I don't have the skills there. Should have just left it at my Tech's place, a year is about right for him--he's slow and backed up!

I also find the 517 a little dark so maybe it needs some recapping as well. It sounds OK but not as detailed as it should; very much as you first described your 999?

    Enjoy!

The au-999 was know to be somewhat lacking in detail.
But the preamp mods were both easy and improved both
    detail, bass and power output.
