Hi guys,
I'm thinking of getting Mark a new sub for Christmas, since his Polk DSW Pro500 has died, so I want to get him a new one. However, I don't want to go back to Polk for a sub since this one crapped out at such a young age.
I am willing to spend up to $500.00 for it, please give me recommendations within that amount, and in the size and spec range of the 500 that will be a good choice. Thanks.

Cathy, is DIY a possibility?
The Martycube I am building uses a 15 or 18" driver (Stereo Integrity sells a 18" driver for 160, Parts Express 15 or 18" Ultimax or 460H) drivers have been used). There is a guy on AVS selling pre-cut kits for the sub you just need a few cheap tools to finish off for like 250 and then the rest would simply go into a amp to drive it.
Otherwise the Parts Express Titanic kits are good as well and prebuilt as well and likely within your range.
There are a plethora of options DIY that require little to no effort to put together, but require you to do some finish work provided thats an option...
Otherwise I'd say look out for a used SVS Cylinder as they are cheaper to ship and should be in your price range used..."....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." Cathy, my DSW pro 600 died and after reading several threads on hear this is on the top of my short list: http://www.svsound.com/subwoofers/ported-box/pb-1000. Also, if you want to go used this might be an option:

Ask Rick88 to hook you up lol.
I just got a bash pb12-nsd.
And.........
best piece I have purchased yet.
Very Musical and subtle for movies.
The best part of the SVS is how quiet it is when you want it to be and a absolute monster when needed for those intense action sequences(or bassy music)
I was coming from 2 Polk 505's and the svs
Utterly annihilated both of them in every way.
The think that intetsted me th most is when it went low it was as if the sound was there but tactile, pressure presence was unexpected.
Okay, enough rambling lol
Also, Ender does offer a very good option
With a DIY. Especially if you like/can build and finish it the way you want. And to say "yeah I built it". Either way, you cannot go wrong.
Cheers!!

DIY is not an option, but the SVS certainly looks good, I didn't realize they made subs that small. But I haven't looked into subs in years. Keep them coming fellas. Hi Cathy,
Sorry to read of Mark's sub problem, has he contacted Polk's CS department?
Regards, Ken -
Good morning Ken,
He hasn't mentioned it. However, both of us feel dismayed that a product that was purchased less than 10 years ago already needs service. These products are not cheap and meant to last a long time or should for what they cost.
There is also the fact that others have had their DSW line subs also break down, which leads me to question quality control. Hence looking elsewhere for a sub.Marantz AV-7705 PrePro, Classé 5 channel 200wpc Amp, Oppo 103 BluRay, Rotel RCD-1072 CDP, Sony XBR-49X800E TV, Polk S60 Main Speakers, Polk ES30 Center Channel, Polk S15 Surround Speakers SVS SB12-NSD x2 -
I understand, Cathy. If he decides to contact Polk, let me know and I'll let Kim, at Polk, know.

I'd go SVS. Great products, service and warranty. I own the pb1000 and its the best sub I've owned to date. They can be had on thier outlet for under 500. Trust me you won't be disappointed with SVS.My Setup: Denon AVR X3600h, Polk Signature S50 Fronts w/ S30 Center and S15 Rears, LG UBK90 4K Player, TCL 6-Series 65”4k TV

Polk was more than happy to help me with an amp for one of my PSW111's even after it was a couple of months past its warranty I got a good deal Kenneth is a man of his words and my dealings with Polk was quick painless and I had my PSW111 up and running in no time. perhaps you can get yours repaired and then get the SVS to boot.Home Theater

Just a tad over budget. Misread the OP to say "around" $500, not "up to" $500.Things work out best for those who make the best of the way things work out.-John Wooden -

I just picked up a 150 watt 8" Def Tech sub for $6.99 at my local GW. Paired it with my LSi-7s. Originally over $299. Not a bad solution for me! Reasonably musical once tweaked properly. Of course, you always take a risk buying used. One problem, this thing does not turn itself off when the amp is off even though it's supposed to. So I just have to pull the sub cable and it shuts down!
150/350 watt peak. Seems similar to a Polk PSW 111, I can't complain. It does exactly what I need, add an octave or two to the bottom end of a decent pair of bookshelves.
