Thinking hard about getting an 8kw system installed. Cost is 22,500 after rebate. Will cut down bill 30 to 40 percent. 181.00 mo for 12 years and after that we own it. Supposedly will increase our homes value by 40k. Any of this sound like bunk? Im a newbee at this.

Where do you live ? Do you plan on living there longer than 12 more years ? Did you factor in any maintenance costs ? Highly doubt the 40k increase in value.HT SYSTEM-

We moved in last Oct. Probably last house. Live in Ohio, south of Dayton. Yeah, the 40k seemed a bit high, but im sure it would add something.

I have a 16.3 on my house for about 23k, before tax rebate of 7k. I think the home appreciation was in the 10-15k range. I wish it were 40k.
I have had it for a year now and my electric for the year will be close to zero, because I wasn't careful last winter when not much is generated. Still even $50 a year isn't bad considering I leave my amps on from Friday morning to Sunday night.Lumin X1 file player, Westminster Labs interconnect cable

Good to know. If you got twice the kw for around the same price, maybe i should shop around a bit.

Where do you live?

what brand panels and inverters. The resident limit for rebates is 10Kw. The 30% federal rebate ends next year. I am really pleased with our solar system. I went with Itek panels and inverters all made in Washington and brings the highest net metering payback. Our system should back back in 5-6 years. GO SOLAR!

Check with WLDock, IIRC he works for a Solar company in NW Indiana (Gary area)...

I did a 20 year prepaid lease for a 9.1kw system. In it for $14k and the solar company warranties everything including the inverter for 20 years with guaranteed production metrics. No maintenance on my part. I could have owned the same system for $32k after rebates but would have to maintain it myself and the warranty on the inverter is only 10 years. Leasing was the better option for me. Saved $4,500 in electric and propane costs in year 1.____________________________________________________________

I thought deronb1quote was not bad...not sure how competitive the market is in OH?

Okay. I was wrong. My system is 6.5kW, 26 panels, for $16k after the tax credit. I have no idea where the 16.3 came from. One reason why I am good at my job is I learned a long time ago to not rely on my memory, and use Google instead.Lumin X1 file player, Westminster Labs interconnect cable

16.3 could have been a daily number for kWh that your system produced.
Still 6.5kW for the price you paid was a good deal!

Better off putting the 40k in another investment, say be a landlord or something. Every solar anything I bought has always not worked after some time. I haven't spent top dollar either, but my faith isn't in it as yet. I would only buy if it had a warranty long enough to at the very least have it pay you back more than it cost to begin with before it breaks.Onkyo TX-NR636

Thanks for the input. Actually, the investment is 22k after rebate. Haven't talked warranty, service or all that yet with them.

Ok, looks like we are going with an 8kW system for 18k after rebate. Comes out to $2.25 per watt. Is that about right? Also, Ohio has an "Eco-Loan" program where they subsidize bank loans for renewable energy. So a 4.99% loan from a participating bank, turns into a 1.99% loan for 84 mos for us. Not too bad really.
-
Sounds about in the ball park. You can always go with the cheapest contractor, but lowest cost does not mean 'best value'.
We paid $19.8K for a 4.8kW system, $13.6K after federal tax credit and another $900 off from a CA rebate.
We paid for the system outright from some 'windfall' savings we had stashed away.
Based on 2014 actuals for power generation vs consumption, it should be a net zero to SDG&E at the end of the year.

Ok sounds good. Thanks for the input. We are all electric here. Hoping to get clost to 50/50
