If i was to add a amp 200wpc to a vintage Yamaha cr1000 70wpc receiver would i be loosing all the good things (that i find) in a Yamaha receiver. I would like to put more juice to the speakers. I havent got the receiver yet. Have the RTA15tl speakers & Adcom amp. But its got me wondering. I could add the CR1000 to the Monitor11's which i think would be a good match also.. Trying to decide where to piece it in. Any thoughts are welcome.

    Depends on the amplifier.
I have never heard an Adcom that I much cared for, but I haven't heard every Adcom product ever made.
The CR-1000 is a good sounding receiver. You do know that the difference between 200 and 70 watts is only 4.6 dB. Not insignificant; but not very much, either.

That said, you cannot beat empiricism. Try it and see!

Thanks Mark i might just try it on the 11's & call it a day. I listened to them for 2 hours today & enjoyed every min of it & it will go nicely with it. I took the plunge at a cr1000 because the first time i saw one i was in awe because they are beautiful

I didn't know you had picked up a CR-1000, actually. Have you posted a photo of it anywhere? I know you've seen mine ;- )
  • boston 1450,

You might find that the CR-1000 offers more than you think. The 70 wpc rating at 8 ohms was rather conservative. My CR-1000 connected to an 8 ohm dummy load hit 120 wpc, both channels driven, before hitting clipping on the test bench. So the difference between the Yamaha & the Adcom may be smaller than expected.

Please post your opinions on the relative sound!

    Cheers, Jim

You would definitely hear a difference! Whether you would like it or not, that's another question. If you threw in one of your tube buffers you might be OK, since Yammies are NOT "warm" and neither is the Adcom: you "need" something to "warm" things up there so your ears don't take a beating! lol

Thanks all. I will be getting it soon & i will try them on each set of speakers & let my ears decide. With the RTA's i figured more power to get the best out of them. Probably so in separates'. Id hate to loose on the Yamaha sound. I will probably stick with the Monitor 11's being they are both kinda not being well known units & they should match nicely too. T/A

  • Tried this once with a Marantz 2245 (refreshed) and a B&K Ref 200.2.

I went from 45wpc to 200wpc. In the end I felt like the B&K took away from what made the 2245 so special, so it was removed.

^^^^ thats what i was afraid of. I wasnt sure if the CR1000 would push the RTA's good enough so i thought of adding a 200wpc amp BUT not wanting to loose sound quality over it. (I may hook up just receiver n give it a listen anyways & if not the 11's will) Its not about the db's or how loud it would go BUT i do love the Yamaha sound. Kinda like the Marantz sound. You dont want to loose it over power-for power hungry speakers
